i have a friend who has a 801 and the pto jumps out of gear what would cause this and what will fix it.thanks

assuming a straight gear model and not an sos unit, have him check to see if there is thrust play in the pto shaft ( in / out play ). if so, it will walk itself out of engagement, and eventually do enough damage to require a rear split.

lack of a working detent can complicate or worsen this condition too.

If it has thrust play, he needs to drain sumps, pull oto and check bearings, split rings and bearing carriers, many times a split ring is broke or popped out of groove, sometimes bearing it carrier is bad, can be caused by a telescoping pro shaft that is too long and its pressures on pro stub, or one that sticks and pulls excessively on pro stub when it needs to be extended

Oh yeah.. huge thrust play. I'd say something like 0-1/32 would be acceptable.. 1/16 maybee even on a bad day...

He needs to pull his pto shaft assy after draining oil. he woull probably find a broke or oppped out split ring.

if there is side play in the shaft, then it could be bearing.

at this time, it's adviseable to go ahead and do the seay and if needed, wear ring. if the split ring popped out. look at the ring and the groove it rides in .. if the shoulders of the groove are rounded at the top.. it may have a hard time staying in. also look at the pto equipment he uses. shafts that are too long and put compressional forces on the stub will pop them. smae with telescoping shafts that need to stretch out longer but stick, then tub on the shaft stub.

both situations will pop split rings out and create massive thrust play.

if he's very luck and been living right.. it's a 10m job to drain oil, 5m job to remove 4 botls nad snatch assy out. have newspaper layed out on floor to catch excess oil and lay shaft assy on for inspection. might be as easy as using 2 screwdrivers to spiral a ring back in and replace pto gasket and stab back in and go. you can cut a new pto gasket using old one as a template.. or lay gasket paper to the hole and lightly tap around it with a brass or copper happer or roun of a ballpeen to make an impression, then cut it out.. card stock thickness paper is fine. ok to use permatex on the paper in this application, both sides even.. but don't use goop alone.

clean all old gasket off both flanges first. when you restab the pto.. support it till it is 90% of the way in. you are passing thru a seal between sumps. beating the shaft around will hog the seal out.

again. if living good.. this is a 20m job start to finish.. refill oils after replacing plugs.

if oils were brand new, you could catch in clean pails and re use, strain thru paint strainer, wifes leg hose or threadbare tshirt
