pump control valve

I have a 1946 ford 2n that the lift went all the way up while bush hoggin and would not go back down. Took left side insp cover off and discovered control valve cotter pin had come out of lever assy connector rod which resulted in control valve and spring lying in bottom of sump.
I have removed PTO shaft and pump. I cannot figure out how the contol valve, spring and the rod that goes inside of the spring goes back together. I have a FO4 manual but in Fig FO156 on PG 102 it looks like the tapered end of valve goes inside the bushing but the spring has no function this way. Can anyone help me with putting humpty dumpty back together again? Also the little rod that goes inside the valve has slight bend in it. Is the bend normal or is it supposed to be straight? Does the rod go inside the valve from the round end or the tapered end?

See if this helps any...

Yeah, that helps a lot with which way the valve goes into the bushing on pump. Do you happen to know if the little rod inside valve is supposed to have a slight bend in it and if that rod slides into valve from non-tapered end toward tapered end?

I don't have any experience with the 9N, 2Ns, but I am sure some of the others know.
