The gentleman I bought my 861 from says it's best to run 100% gasoline thru it without any ethanaol like it's had for years. Problem is, closest place for me to get 100% is about 75 miles from me. Will it hurt the engine to run regular unleaded with 10% ethanol that I use in my car and suburban? Also, what octane would be best for this old engine? 87, 89 or higher?
Thanks!

My personal opinion: pure gasoline is best to run in ANYTHING if you can get it. Ethanol merely reduces performance, fuel economy and adds to the corn syrup buildup in carbs and fuel systems in general.

The engine's compression ratio is only about 7 or 7.5:1 so the lowest octane available is sufficient.

I've been running ethanol blend in my Jubilee for
more than a decade with no problems. Biggest problem
with ethanol seems to be if it sits - it doesn't
keep like plain gas.

es, treat it like milk & don't let it sit around & go sour! Burn it!

can be hard on older style orings and the fuel will plug the carb jets if you let it sit too long.

otherwise, it will work.. just need to run it more often.

I cant understand it, but almost every station where I live in Wis. has one pump with ethanol free gas. It costs more, but no problem getting it. Why is it not available in some areas of the country?

Dont know what you mean by pure gas, but both Shell and Kwik Trip advertise Ethanol free. I also so the ad at the Mobil station.

Your engine will run fine on gasoline with ethanol, albeit with slightly reduced efficiency and power.

Gasoline with ethanol is, however, MUCH more likely to boil in the fuel tank on hot days when working the tractor hard.

I have been running E-85 in my 541 for 2 years , just for the heck of it. Other than opening the main jet up about 3/4 of a turn thus taking more of it. I am waiting for the "first shoe to drop"

Here s a link to finding gas without ethanol. pure-gas.org when you reach the sight just click on your state at the bottom

(quoted from post at 19:26:22 04/09/12) Didn't think pure gas was available anywhere except in Av. gas.
hat is a wrong "think"........and that is a fact, not a think. Just bought 55 gal Thursday. Here the oil company that services farms does not carry any ethanol tainted gasoline! They know the long term problems. That is why the ethanol is added to the mix as they load the tank trucks at the depot for gas station deliveries. No supplier ever stores it already mixed!

It's highly unlikely he was running "100 percent" gasoline. And any gas station can put an "ethanol free" sign on their pump, since nobody bothers to test. My tractor doesn't seem to care what I put in it, including some very old gas I drained out of a car. Yours won't care either. These old tractors won't run on water, but just about anything else is fine.

Mark's wild speculation aside, 100% is readily available outside those few high-emission areas designated by the epa. Just facts, please.
