Quad Range Hanging in gear

I have a 4630 that when shifted into 1&2 and 3&4 works fine in A-B-C-D. When trying to shift through 1-2-3-4 it hangs up in N or 1-2 or 3-4. It will still shift in 1-2 or 3-4 you just can"t get it out of gear if it is hung in those gears. Otherwise it runs and pulls fine. This just happens about 30% of the time most of the time it works fine.

I believe that the proper way to shift a quad range is to come to a complete stop when going through neutral!! I have driven many different ones and some you can shift through on the roll and some you cant,,, or shouldnt!! Depends on how you operate them or if they have been ram-jammed in the past!!

You have to stop for A-B-C-D But 1-2 to 3-4 you can shift on the roll it works fine. It is not jammed, just when you try to shift sometimes it hangs in 1-2 or N or 3-4

I know you guys know this but 1-2 and 3-4 are no clutch functions. Everything else is clutch assisted.

I have found with several Deere"s that they don"t like to be parked on a hill where pressure is against the gearing when trying to start up and leave. Same thing when trying to shift.

Possibly some of your problems are terrain related.

Also, sometimes when mine (gears) don"t want to engage, I don"t try to force it, I just go back to where I started, reclutch and make another run at it. The linkage to the cab station has a pretty long run too....kinda like we used to have with cars and column shifters vs floor mounts.

That parking on a slope thing had to do with the ABCD shift though. That was the first thing they told me when they unloaded mine off the truck when I bought a new one. The linkage was spring loaded. If you were nose down a slope,you had to force it in to A then put the other shift in reverse and ease the clutch up. Vice versa if it was trying to roll backwards. The post at the bottom sounds about right. Mine was in the shop for transmission work twice to the tune of $4500 or so both times. Geez I miss that tractor. (that's sarcasm)

I would check the cab mounts,and the area around the hi/lo shift linkage. The cab mounts can wear and settle causing a bind on the linkage,the area around the shift valve can get trashed up with fodder,dirt or grass and make shifting difficult.

No it will happen when i am just driving. I will try to down shift and it will not go to N from 3-4 or i will be trying to up shift and it will not go to N fo 1-2. then sometime's when I get it into N I cant get it out? But it is not terian related.

Helped an older farmer with harvest about 25 years ago. He had two Deeres with quad range. He insisted that I start in B range in the field, get on the pavement, clutch and jam it into C-all with out stopping. It worked, but later I found out that is not good. OOPS Greg

had an 8630 with quad range, had the synchronizer clutch pack explode... not a massive job to fix, but it was stuck in gear completely, i couldn"t shift out of A1 at all, 1-2 clutch pack was the one that failed... and because the 1-2-n-3-4 level had a gear selected i was unable to shift the range lever A-B-C-D. But if the problem is intermittent it is unlikely to be a clutch pack failure. Maybe check the hydraulic filters for debris, it"s possible that something is broke in the rear end, but unlikely as it works most of the time. I"m leaning towards MSM "s idea. that seems to make sense.

This was back in 93 but I belive they replaced shifting forks gears bearings and counter shafts ,but labor ate up a lot of that 10 grand

Replace the detent with the ball and socket kind that were used on the old 2010s.That should fix it.

I'll agree that mine isn't perfect each time either. Since some of the gears require 2 levers to move together when going to a different gear, a little linkage maladjustment could make the difference.

Mine only has 4000 hours on it so you'd think the linkage would still be in pretty good shape.

Hear you on love that tractor. I really like mine.

I can understand a $4500 price for repair with having to remove the cab and all. Was in the Deere dealer one day and they were working on one and the cab was up in the air on a chain hoist. Looking over their shoulder, looked like too much for me to ever want to tackle.
