Question about spark plugs

I was going to pull a plug out today to check whether or not I had flat top pistons are the ramped up ones, like someone suggested. I was also going to give a quick eyeball to the spark plug, although after 10 years of not running I think I am probably going to replace all 4 regardless.

Anyway, I [u:f8d99891a3]thought[/u:f8d99891a3] the special socket in my set with some rubber inside and a surface on the top to crank with a wrench was a spark plug socket. But when I went to try it, it doesn't even come close to being big enough, and the biggest deep socket I have, the 11/16, isn't big enough either.

Do I have weird plugs that are bigger than normal, or do I need to buy a special spark plug socket?

The sparkplugs use a 7/8" hex. You can buy a sparkplug socket that size, but you may have to look a while. Much easier to just take a sparkplug along and look for a deep socket that has deep enough splines that the plug will go up inside. I have a 1/2" drive one from Sears that works better than my Snap-On plug socket.

You can buy a 7/8 spark plug socket if you can find one. A 7/8 inch deep socket will work also, just don't break the plug, the socket will flop around some.

Ijust checked the socket that we used to change plugs on a ih 6 cyl engine in a 60s payloader. 13/16 from tawain I think from H/F It works in SOCAL CC

The 13/16 socket your tool box has will fit most car but very few tractors. Most of the farmalls have a 7/8 based plug so you will need to go buy your self a thin walled 7/8 to remove your plugs

Mike, like the others said about the socket, 7/8 will do it. But, if the center electrode has square edges the old plugs are most likely fine to use. As long as the plugs aren"t wet from oil soaking or flooding they are ok to use in the tractor engines. Save the money. I have had my f-12 since 1999 and it has the same plugs in it when I bought it and they were old then, it runs like a champ! Spend the money on carb cleaner and a wire brush to clean the plugs. You will need the wire brush down the road, trust me!

My H has Champion D21 spark plugs in it and you need a deep 7/8" socket to remove them.

Hi we are using NGK AB-2 Spark plugs in Farmalls M and H. They take normal auto size plug wrenches and they work fine. Actually using them for Allis etc as well. Luck! MTF
