Question for B experts!

Have been asked to put a basket case B together!

Was taken apart a decade or so ago for valve problems & was just never reassembled. I now have it running right nicely but am stumped with the final stages. The tractor does not have a tag on it but here's what I know about it. It is an early styled, hand start, 1 1/8" PTO. The gear shift does NOT have a quadrant around it. The top radiator tank is the B 1513 part and that narrows it down to a '39 or '40 with SN over 60000 but less than 96000.

My troubles all revolve 'round the hood, fuel tanks and muffler. The tanks are a single assembly but they look like the AB 1108 tank of the unstyled series!

The muffler also bolts nicely to the radiator's B 1513 top tank but it too is from the US series, with part number B17. Fits like a glove!

The tanks fit nicely into the hood but this hood WILL NOT go on that tractor with the muffler in place! The holes in the hood match fine with the radiator & the breather but NOT the muffler. The parts book only lists one hood for the over 60000 but under 96000 serial numbers. I scratch me head!

I am to the point I'm suspecting the hood may be a B3092 hood for B's 96001 and up to 200999 but I don't have any to compare with.

Anybody been here before? Anybody know what is the difference between the B 1541 and the B 3092 hoods?

I don't really want to make a bracket to convert to the later AB 2700 muffler from the B1513 tank though it wouldn't be a real difficult task. Would be a looooong way from original as all else on the tractor will be.

Any advice?

i am no expert but i do have a early 39 styled B and was told that the 39 hood is unique to this vintage and that later hoods won't fit.
a lot of un-styled parts were used in this tractor, probably leftovers .
i don't know the difference in the hoods but i can measure mine if this would help.

Those '39-40's take alot of special parts. Kinda like an unstyled , but not really.

I think the hoods have the holes for the gas and fuel tanks closer together then a later hood.
And yes that tank is similar to an unstyled but isn't.
And that model takes a special muffler. An unstyled one is not to work. I don't have my parts books handy to check any of the casting numbers you gave.

Al, if you don't have it already, go online (ok, you're already online...) go to...

jdpc.deere.com

download PC330 best of all it's free.

you should be able to piece things together. Good luck.

I swapped out my mufflers from a 40 B to a 37 B for this same reason. Big diffrence. US B's dont have the dent. That would be youre problem. If yours has the dent, then...well.. your jut s.o.l. lol :)

Put <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIjNH2ghdTA">"Uncle Earl"</a> our 39B together a few years ago.

First is a photo of the original fuel tank(s).

Tank had to be installed inside hood before replacing the hood on tractor.

Here are the photos of the original hood.

Do remember that the hood with tank was heavy; but didn't have any alignment problems with the muffler, air stack, or radiator openings.

Here are a couple of photos of the muffler.

Don't remember if it has a dent or not; can't really tell from the photo.

The 39 and 40 are a "hybrid" between the unstyled and styled tractors; they share some common parts with both series.

This weekend I'll try to remember to take some measurements between the openings on one of the hoods.

Hope this helps a little.

That seems to be the problem. Everything else matches up with the parts book but the hood not having a number jsut doesn't seem to fit & the muffler is too far back to fit this hood's muffler hole. Thanks.

Looks to me like your Uncle Earl could be this tractors brother! Looks like perfect matches in all your pictures. Thanks for the time that took.

Thanks to all. James Howell's pictures look like they could have been of this tracotor! I believe this hood is off of a later B and the holes are just too far apart to fit over this early styled B's stacks. Will do some more hunting & talk with the owner some more about what he wants to do.

Thanks guys!

Later.
