Questions on '39 H

I understand the on the early '39 H's, the serial number was stamped on top of the right hand side rail just behind the radiator. Does anyone know at what serial number this practice stopped? Also was there indeed a SN plate in additon to the rail stamping or just that SN alone? One more, then I'll quit; is the engine number likely to match the chassis number on the early tractors? Thanks for any info.

Can't say for sure, but I doubt if there would have been a serial number plate in addition to the number stamped into the frame rail.

It is highly likely that the engine number did match the tractor number.

Can't say about the serial number tag, but my 44 H does have matching serial numbers on the tag and engine.

Rusty my '39M has a serial tag and the # on the frame and the engine # and they all match. # 1094 Tom

Do not know if early tractors had serial number on frame and serial number tag or not but this is what is posted on Case/IH online parts catalog site.
"The chassis (or tractor) serial numbers on these tractors (H and HV) are stamped on the name plate on left side of the clutch housing. The chassis serial numbers for both of these tractors corresponds with the engine serial number except the letter "M" is omotted."

a very few of the first ones did not have a serial number tag but very soon in production they had all three identifying marks. the tag, stamped frame rail and the number on the engine. i have m number 691 and it has all three.

I have serial number 700, and it is only stamped on the block and side rail. The clutch housing was never drilled for a serial tag. I have seen Hs without provisions for a tag to about 1000, and the highest M I have seen without a tag is around 750..
