Just left an old farmers BS session at my friend Jimmys from St Joseph Illinois who lives here in the RV park and we hade a few questions that I couldnt answer fer sure

1) Did they make any 720 Elecric Start Diesels?? I had a 730 elec start n thought all 720 were pony start????????

2) I thought allllllllllll 4020 Diesels were 24 volt, did they make any late models that were factory original 12 volt???

3) I forgot the last question, something about 4430 being all 8 speeds......

John...they made 720 e/s diesels late in 1958. Not too many though.

When Deere went to the side console in 1969 they went to a 12 volt, negative ground system with an alternator. Twelve volt 3020 and 4020 diesels were made from 1969 through 1972.

Also, John the 4020 gassers were 12 volt start as the 4020 diesels were 24 volt start.

Regarding forgetting the last question -

One of the transmission offerings for the 4430 was the 16 speed Quad Range. Probably the most widely sold variation around here.

the late 720 diesels offered elec start on row crop std and high crops the high crops are rare about 9 made there have been a few sold lately for six figures. there is one on polks sale in late march if you need one

...on the 402D's, I remember that the very late ones had Motorola alternators. I checked the parts book, and they had a 12 volt alternator and two 6 volt batteries....Not sure what the serial number breaks meant in terms of years.

See why I love it here !!!!!!! The old farmer (totally computer or internet liilterate) who asked those questions just stopped by my RV and in like 5 mins THERE ARE THE ANSWERS he was amazed. In the meantime we went to Tractor Data.com plus I googled some of this and he couldnt believe all the info being so easily available

As the others stated yes on 720D"s electric start, we had one of each growing up,,the 4020"s after 201,000 serial no. were all 12 volt, 4430"s had 3 optional transmissions ,8spd sychro range,8 spd power shift, and 16 spd Quad range

Cousin has a 8 speed syncro range in a 4430 and know of a 4630 with the syncro also. chris

Late 4020 diesels were 12 volt. Came with 12 volt Delco 37MT starters.

If the 4020 has the consol type controls it is 12 volt.

The 720D standards with direct electric start are kinda rare, something like 102 built. My cousin has one that my late uncle (her father) bought new.

Tim, there actually was another variation offered which would no doubt be rare. The 4430 was also available in a Creeper transmission. Still basically a Syncro-Range with the additional reduction in front of it. Mike

Yes,,I remember that now,,I saw one at a big action company several years ago. Probably used in veggie harvest...only one I have ever seen..

Mike, go south. You will find alot of 4230 and 4430's with a syncro transimmission and a creeper gear.They should win any slow tractor race. They were popular where tobacco was raised in NC,SC and GA.

I stay in the RV overflow campground (all week) on the middle North end of the grounds, Jimmy doesnt stay there he just drives over a day or two from the RV park where we stay south of Avon park maybe 18 miles SE of Flywheelers

I will tell him you asked, yes he often has one of those funny old fart hats instead of a regular farmers baseball caps
