Okay, youre running along in a field and you hear and see something pop out of its place in the engine, then smoke starts flowing everywhere- do you...

A) stop the tractor, turn it off, and call a trusted mechanic

B) Try to fix it yourself with whatevers on hand

C) say thats a night and call your budies the next morning

D) Swear a few times, whack it back into place with any availiable body part (head, fist, etc), swear a few more times, and keep going.

E) go get the part from the dealer

BTDT 8630 Deere that had a rod that wanted out and it just happened to take the oil line off of the turbo on its way out, after the fire department extinguished the fire the Deere dealer came and got it and replaced the engine with an 8850 at no cost because they had many problems with the 8630 engines.

Hmmm...Depends on mood.... Might be D first, or it might be A first. Can't do B very well and it would just end up back at D again anyways! Though you didn't include F - park it, walk back to house muttering and cursing to self, upload puter, pull up YT and describe problem on here and wait impatiently for a useful reply!

Did the 955 CID V-8 "8850" engine fit real well in place of the 8630's 619 CID in-line 6-cylinder engine... ENQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW!

Bob, it took them around six weeks to get it back to us they did have to make several mods. From what I remember (25 years ago) they also de-tuned it to 300 hp. to keep the drive train intact.

First thing I would do is buy a better brand of tractor. What on an engine could pop up outta place and cause smoke that wasn't a serious problem? I suppose maybe a sparkplug wire could get on the manifold and smolder and smoke. To answer from your list I would have to know what went wrong. Maybe only option is get a new part, maybe I have the part on hand, just maybe I can put it back together right there or maybe it is time to pull it in the shop and tear it apart and then do a combo of several of the options given. Then again if it were a Case you wouldn't be in this mess to begin with!
