R flywheel, timing

Can the flywheel on early R"s be put on wrong so the timing marks are out of alignment?

When I try to line up with the DC 1&4 mark on the compression stroke, the DC 1&4 mark actually lines at near the very end of the intake stroke, as in the intake valve is still closing. (tractor uses magneto ingition)

Any help would be great

No expert here, messed with R some. First the marks are hard to find when tractor together. They are way out on teeth almost! Second, rust covers all the finer marks/letters, needs good cleaning. If I recall the actual timing on these engines is not TDC or close. Depending on batt or mag use the mark you need is way ahead, maybe 37* or such. There is a stamped mark, but then the manual says to measure farther from that mark in inches and mark your spot with paint or ?? I used red and yellows. This is for a static set, then use light when running to align more accurately. Do you have actual manual for tractor/engine? IT manuals cover this I believe and the MM ones if you have. I'ld have to dig out info again to check, been quite awhile since messed with mine. Cleaning and marking with paint are my best suggestions for now.
AND...Yes, the flywheel can be bolted on in any one of four positions with it's square bolt pattern. Best to mark flywheel AND the crank end when dis-assembling with stuff that won't wash off, which happened to Me! We finally got it tho.

I am pretty sure the flywheel can be installed 180 degrees off.
The nice thing about that EE engine is that you can take the cover off the side and see what the crank and camshaft are actually doing.

Thanks for the input.

I checked another crank that I have and it has 2 indexing pins. So the flywheel can only be installed correct or 180 off. Luckily, my flywheel had clear markings for 2&3 DC.
