re 4030 vs 2840

Don't be too quick to discount the Mannhiem tractors. I have a 2120 (Cdn version of a 2030) with over 11,000 hours and still in use; has had sleeves and pistons; a 2755 with 6000 hrs and a 2955 (similar to the 2840) that I bought new and now has 6500 hrs. with only minor repairs. You do have a slower reverse gear in the 2955 which is real handy for blowing snow with a raer mount blower. The 'park' feature on the Waterloo tractore with a Quad Range can be a bit hard to release, vs. the handbrake on the other---and the handbrake does allow more accurate positioning when attaching an implement. Either tractor will serve you well and each has its own place; I just had to add some praise for the 2840 side of the story!!

2120,2755 & 2955 are a lot better tractors than a 2840. I sold 2840's when they were NEW & IMHO 2840's rank right behind the 2010 diesel as the 2nd sorriest tractor JD ever built.

I am thankful that the 2840 were not marketed here in Canada although certain Mannheim models sold here had their own issues.
My BIL had a 2130 and I still rank it as the best utility tractor I have ever run. The steering and handling were in my book second only to a 4020.
That 2130 did a lot of work too....It pulled an 8RN JD planter in 5th low all day with no problems, scuffled (cultivated) 1000's of acres of beans with an 8 row scuffler and pulled and windrowed more White Beans than I care to think about. My brother worked for the inlaws and ended up buying the tractor from them.
I owned a later 3130. Some of these had a bad rap but I liked mine. It was "enhanced" and would make 105 Hp on the dyno. With it being heavier and longer than the 2130 it wasn't as handy but still would handle a variety of work as my only tractor of the time.

Yea,I was looking at the 50 series tractors, just don't know much about them.Would like a cab on next tractor I buy. When I was a kid we had a Ford 6600 with cab, heat, and air...nice setup.Only cab tractor I've ever used.Has since gone down the road.Thank's for your input.

I think the 3130 was replaced by the 2840. Sheet metal was different. Earlier 3120 had 303 engine.
Biggest problem was brake facings on almost new tractors clogging screen and ruining hi-lo.

Looks like a good deal newgen, looking closer to home though. There's a 4230 with SG cab has 7000 hrs. their asking 12,500.It's close to where I live. There's a 4030 open station for sale also close by.Their asking 8900 for it.Probably a pos.

(quoted from post at 16:06:29 01/04/15) I think the 3130 was replaced by the 2840. Sheet metal was different.

3130 built '73-'79
2840 built '77-'79
2840 was built for sales in N.America
3130 was built for European sales therefore didn't have a Nebraska test.
