Thanks for the link El Toro! That one looks like it's storing them in YT's TractorShed. No problem doing that; I just didn't see too many other 'parts' photos there - maybe not really looking either.

I might sign up a Photobucket, or perhaps see how they come out if I upload them directly in a thread of another forum where I think they might like to see what project I got myself into. Head is now off and I certainly have some pictures!

Thanks again!

now that you got the bull by the horns tell us if that ATF would have loosend it up with out dissasembly.how much rust is on them sleeves?

...1929
Thanks rustred!
...ATF...
I have photos to go with that too!

I'll add the photos in the original thread. This is technically El Toro's thread so I can't speak for him, but from my side: Mods if you'd like to cut and paste this one into the original that'd be fine with me.

now you can see what i am talking about. i cant see 2 gal. or 45 gal.of ATF ever making this engine run. when its stuck its stuck. just take it apart and do it properly.

Spiffy,I wish i was there helping you. This is my favorite part of restoring, just breaking that motor loose is most of my satisfaction. That motor is no worse then any other motor.Heat is your best help, fill each one of the pistons with deisel fuel and let burn, one piston at a time, jaring on the top of the piston with a peice of flat steel and a 12 plus pound hammer, protect your cylinder walls and the top of your pistons.

It looks pretty good inside that engine after sitting all those years. I never saw a 22-36 in this area, but there were plenty of 10-20's and 15-30's. Hal
PS: Here's a pic of one that was restored and painted with Vansickle paint. I was looking at their paint colors when I saw this picture.

Thanks SproutW! Glad you're enjoying them.

Thanks Jim! Before it wound up in my machine shed, I thought it was going to be any easy one; however, no doubt, it is the challanges that make the rewards greater!

It looks pretty good for being 79 years old. I see that weberstractorworks.com has a sleeve kit for the 15-30. You can contact them at 815-389-1493. Hal

Great minds think alike; thanks so much El Toro! Just called them yesterday; of course, the pre29 15-30 takes 4.5" holes instead of 4.75"; however it sounds like they can help me out. With a bit over .015 being the loosest [and needing the least clean-up], that does present more options (perhaps a .020 or .030 pistons/rings if a set is floating around the country); the tractors owner had a couple contacts that had some odd things like that - he was hoping to here back today. Ideally I'll know which direction soon, so Murphy's law doesn't start tumbling dominoes with me exactly one dominoe behind!

(quoted from post at 11:44:15 10/15/08) I think maybe the owner has been talking to me about parts for this. In South Dakota, maybe??

I believe you nailed it.

I'm keeping all the pictures (and pasting info back) to my original thread here:

A neat project in that, it's "all there" ; however, plenty of worn and/or damaged (between being stuck, and having the governor go in the first place) parts deserving replacement. But he has sentimental value in it, so beyond completely insane, a few parts are not the end of the world. I think it will be a really nice tractor when complete!

Hone your cylinders and Install new rings, from rice equ and every thing will be fine,Also pull your sleeves and replace your rubber O rings. These motors are very forgiving.I have a peice of 3/4 flat steel the same diameter as the piston and a 2in square bar about 8 in. long and I hit the pistons with a 20lb hammer, never hurt any thing yet

Thanks James!

You're right: I didn't see any damage incurred from beating on the top. I was trying to be extra cautious and stuck to the 4X4, but to keep the real effect of the impact I sure like your idea of the steel plate and square stock. Dumb question, but how does everyone else deal with the crank shaft when all the pistons are stuck pretty good? I didn't like the idea of whacking too hard while two others would be forcing back down on the crank.

There was some scoring on at least #3 (prior to being stuck), piston and sleeve so that would have taken a bit of clean up; yet that was the tightest sleeve, so may have worked out even. Both the valves and pistons indicated things had been replaced in only one or two holes at a time once or twice [or more] before.

At 1050RPM, low compression, and wide rings, I can sure see these being pretty forgiving. And, like someone else noted, even a good honing and rings will be far ahead of one that was just "broke loose and ran." Truth be told I'm not sure where the 'line' is; on the 460D, it was obviously all the way, I recall hearing of a few 'as bad as or worse than before' jobs using just rings there. On H's or the like, parts are pretty cheap so it's pretty easy to say 'get it like new.'

Anyway, since this isn't my tractor, and he is talking about plowing contests and the like, I didn't want to offer advice leading to any concern that it may fail later [Murphy's Law!], so I let him choose (I did note that I read about other people coming out well with rings only, and had done exactly that on my Regular which isn't perfect but was markedly improved by rings). Pretty sure he's getting the overhaul kit.

I wouldn't have complained either way; I certainly like to see money saved, yet when something is all apart it's kind of nice to do the best job possible too.
