Perhaps reading one or two posts besides the original would help to keep from unintentionally tagging on to a reawakening of a five year old thread by a new member.

I'm a bit surprised about how many older posts are showing up on this site. I was a classic user on the old site so maybe I didn't notice old ones there but I'm certainly noticing them now. Was it a similar issue on the old site or is there something about the new changes that makes it easier for them to be dug up?

It seems to be the bubble-up effect of modern forums... any thread replied to, floats to the top of the heap.

I think maybe people are clicking on topics under the "Similar Threads" area (at the bottom of each page/screen), not realizing the age of the thread...thereby reactivating old (and sometimes OLD, old threads).

Nothing wrong with that. If people have something to add, that's great. You always have the option of skipping over them if you don't want to read them.

I think part of the problem that is causing old threads to be put back into circulation is "similar threads". People see " Ford oil leak" and just automatically click it and reply without looking at the date it was originally post. Thus moving a 4 or 5 year old thread back to the top of the board.
Would like to see them get rid of it. But I do not see it happening. For it took them nearly 20 years to upgrade the site update to what it is now.

In the old Classic view when an old thread was replied to we would get the "RE: blah blah"
new stand alone new thread. That was a result of the Classic and Modern views not playing nice with each other.

What I find amusing is that I am seeing responses to current threads that would indicate that they are responding to the O.P. without reading any other response.

I have no problem if someone has relevant info to add to a thread, especially when it comes to repair and operation topics. What does bug me is when folks reply to the OP of a years old thread, and the OP was a one hit wonder themselves, never to be heard from again. I guess people don't look at the profiles of other posters to see that they haven't logged in here for yeeeaaarrrs.

Probably not going to go away, but there has been talk of creating a banner-stripe above the similar threads list. With some sort of notice that says "The threads below are from the past, constructive replies are welcome, chit chat replies are discouraged" or sum such.

That's exactly what they are doing, responding to the OP.

If you left the settings alone, default in this new format is to indent responses directly below the post they're responded to. Except responses to the OP which aren't indented... Then once you get about 3 levels deep it runs out of space to indent.

Reading applies to everyone, some of the old posts are being re-awakened by members and well-known members, if you keep watch.

Yeah, replying to an old post asking about the local Ford dealer trying to chisel $895 out of the OP for a brand new 9N doesn't make much sense .....

Chris has given us a setting on this new forum that allows it to work very similar to the old classic view with newest thread first. Someone replying to a old thread doesn’t bring that thread to the top.
So once again I have no need to skip over a thread where someone is giving advice on a thread so old the tractor has already been fixed because I never see the post. I also don’t have to put up with the drama some threads bring because one reply brings it to the top rather than putting it out of site out of mind buried on page 3.

Bubble up reminds me of Merle back in ‘81, but I don’t think we’re there yet, if ever?

You can check with Chris down below, but I believe the default setting is the "threaded" or indent view. I recall having to go in and uncheck that to get rid of that nonsense.

............. and now have a forum that looks and functions similarly to the majority of other forums on the interweb. We are finally into the current century with the forum software.

In the bar above click on your name. Click "preferences" and uncheck "View threads by who the post replied to (formerly Classic View)". I prefer them in chronological order as well. That also keeps it from displaying the thread in one long stream and starts adding pages like before.
