After standing in line at my DMV trying to get a Real ID, my original birth certificate from 1942 wasn't good enough, I decided I didn't a rea ID. For my remaining years I don't plan to fly, buy a gun, or ammo, or any other hoop I need to jump through with a real ID. How do you feel about the real ID? Stan

I got mine a couple of months ago. Used my genuine birth certificate (not the hospital one), my existing driver's license, and my social security card. Was one of my quickest secretary of state visits, and cost a whole 8 dollars.

Chief, I'm not sure what you're calling "original" birth certificate. I learned a few years back that the real (official) one comes from the county, not the hospital.

Got mine several years ago. Wasn't a big deal. I already had a birth certificate with the county seal and a state issued one with a security feature that you pressed your thumb on and it changes colors. DD214, SS card and some mail. Got a temporary card at the DMV and the real one arrived in the mail about a week later.

It really helps to read all the requirements and then have all your documents lined up before going to the DMV. That makes it easy to get a real ID in one trip.

I have had mine thru a couple of renewals. Not a problem. My original hospital issued one is a museum piece. Has my baby feet displayed in ink. That must have been a hoot inking baby feet in the delivery room.

We don’t plan or have any desire to fly, leave the country or anything else that requires a Real ID but we both have them just in case something comes up. We also have our passports which is what I’ve been using for over 20 years when ever I had to fly.

I just got a renewal notice for my NYS driver's license and I intend to get an "Enhanced" Driver's License (EDL) while I'm at it.
This is one step above a "REAL" ID License as it allows travel to Canada, Mexico and some Carribean nations without a passport.
The LDL costs an additional $30. which I guess is probably a waste of money as I already have a U.S. passport.
I do have to personally appear at DMV and stand in line which is one of those things I hate to do; probably second behind having a colonoscopy.
ss55 has great advice for avoiding any aditional hassle.
Renewal is for 8 years by which time I will be 92, if I last that long. LOL

In South Dakota my REAL Identity is my drivers license with gold star in upper right hand corner. I did nothing extra to get that.

Got mine several years ago, so that i could cross into British Columbia, Canada. Used my birth certificate, a power bill with my home address, and my military DD214. No problem.
I found out last summer that there are two levels of "Real ID". We were visiting my sister in the thumb of Michigan and heading to visit a friend in New Hampshire and our son in Rhode Island. We decided to cut across Canada to save a couple hundred miles. I showed my Real ID at the border and was told that mine was good for travel in the US but not for crossing the border. There is an expanded real ID that you need for international travel. Border patrol let us across but treated us like drug smugglers with extensive questioning and a thorough search of our car and going through all our luggage. Not something I want to repeat. I'll bring my passport from now on.

AFAIK, what you're referring to is not a level of Real ID, it's called an "enhanced license." And I believe it's only good for the Canadian and Mexican borders. Yes, using your passport to leave the country and return is a better idea.

Never heard of different levels.

Yeah, mine too. My dad used to joke that his social security number was 001.

Was your birth certificate a certified one, per the description below?

A certified copy of a birth certificate is a document that has an official state registrar’s raised, embossed, impressed or multicolored seal, the registrar’s signature as well as the date the certificate was filed with the registrar’s office, which has to be within one year of the person's birth. You have to get the certified copies from the office that controls them in your birth state.

Real ID will also be required to access federal office buildings.

For years all I had was the hospital certificate. I had to get an extra a few years ago as I was doing some govt. paperwork and needed to send in a birth certificate and it would not be returned.

My wife recently discovered that the birth certificate she has is a photocopy. One she has used for years, even to get a passport. Turns out her parents have the original and refuse to give it to her.
