For whatever reasons, only 81% of Indiana residents have a Real-ID compliant ID of any type.
Considering 11% of people have never left the state the were born in, and a similar number have never been on an airplane part of that remaining 19% will be fine without Real ID. I would guess the number of people that have no intention of flying is somewhat higher as the older generations had more people that only got on an airplane when Uncle Sam told them to.

I don't have a birth certificate, never been asked for one. I was born 3 weeks early, at home. I don't have a passport, no want or need. been to 6 other states, never flown in an airplane. Rode in a helicopter once scouting fields to fertilize. Pilot said since we are here I might as well run the can out. I got very sick when he pulled up at the end of the field and made a quick turn to go back. He dropped me off real quick when I got sick. I am off grid, no cell phone or home phone #, no mailed bills to pay. I have a drivers license, I had a CDL until doctor would not pass me because of cataracts and then because of problems from surgery....James

I have the gold star. Not too worried. If they want me in a courtroom it won't be by my choice to enter. Flying? No plans but who knows. Canada, not again in my lifetime, went there in '81, got in easy, getting back in the USA was not. Didn't need a passport or any special ID but it was advisable ( I found out the hard way) to re-enter the USA at the same border crossing you left from, not through some two lane crossing in the middle of Montana 300 miles from the entry point. Especially as a long haired, big bell wearing kid of 22. They tore everything apart on the '64 Belvadere, tossed everything in our backpacks on the ground, took the seats out of the car, crawled under it, removed the radio, and then left us there to somehow put it all back together with no tools and no apologies.

Took a look at my NY license that was issued in 2018, and it is an ‘enhanced’ license, that I paid $30 more for. At the time, I don’t remember there being an option for ‘real’ ID.
I note that the enhanced version is not good for flying into or out of Canada or Mexico, but is OK for border crossings by land routes or flying domestically.
What is interesting is that New York still offers ‘enhanced’ licenses, for the $30 fee.
But Real ID instead of a standard license is no extra charge. Baffling. But it shows how it varies from State to State.
My license is due to be renewed in 2026, so I will probably do the real ID thing this time. Although I have a passport anyway.

Was it Canadian Customs that tore everything apart or was it US Customs?

Wow, over the years I have had to provide a certified birth certificate to more than one employer.

I just read where there is something the enhanced license gets us that the real ID doesn't. But I don't remember what it was! I also have the enhanced. Someday I need to get across the lake to get over to Bruce's. He's been over here multiple times!

I had no idea it was so complicated and that the enhanced licence is defunct .

Got real ID on Good Friday in Iowa. Took my license, passport, original SS card and a power bill with my name on it. All I needed. Took 10 minutes. Wife got hers then too... another 10 mins. I have had a passport since I was 13 (am over 60 now). Renewed my latest passport on line - took my own photo and had it in my paws in just over a week. Yes I could carry my passport to fly but I'd rather not somehow misplace that - it doesn't fit in my wallet!

It gets you $30 poorer in NY. Real ID is no extra fee at all, and does slightly more than the enhanced license (air travel in most of North America).
