rear axle broken?

My petrol TE 20 seems to get all the gears but nothing to the back wheels. Lifted the left side rear wheel, put in gear, rear wheel does not turn. Rt rear wheel seemed to clunk when towed to the shed. Is it broken right shaft, bad clutch or both? Regards

Does the PTO spin and the hydraulics work? If they do then the clutch is probably ok. You might have broken the coupler that connects the transmission to the rear end. This coupler is supposed to break before an axle does so I would check that first. If you take off the right side cover plate that has the hydraulic dipstick in it, you should be able to see this coupler above the pump. If it is broken you will have to split the tractor between the transmission and rear end to replace it. If the coupler is intact and spinning, then its probably a broken axle or differential.

You have sheared an axle-shaft. It will need removing, you will need to remove the other one as well to get the broken piece out of the Differential. Be careful when you get another axle-shaft as there are 2 different sizes. One has 16 splines on the inner end and the other has 19 splines and is thicker. You will also need to remove the Brakes and then adjust them later and adjust the end float of the Axle-shafts. If you need written information about repairing the Axle, email me and I can send it to you...John(UK)[email protected]

Tim,

I am not so sure you have completely digonosed the problem.

You say, it seems to get all the gears but nothing to the back wheels. - What is do you mean by this? The shifter shifts and lockes into gear?

With the rear end safely braced so the wheels are off the ground. Did you pull the two inspection plates on the sides of the differential housing and confirm the power shaft is turning?

It is easier to see a broken tranny gear tooth that allows it to shift than a broken axel.

Where are you located. Also do you really have a TE-20 (with the US built Cont. engine) or a TEA-20 (with the UK built Std. Mo. Co. engine.).

Where is your engine oilf filter located? In the oil pan or on the left side of the engine.

Jeff

It looks worst than it is, just get the diff safely blocked up, have a helper available when you take the trumpet off, and clean any chips out of everything. These weren't in the same perdicament as yours, sheared lower link and oil seal troubles, but the process is the same.

Being as you are getting a lot of suggestions as to what it could be. Remove a round side plate, put the tractor in gear and check if the TOP shaft is turning, this is the one above the Pump. If it is, there is no drive from the Diff. and the most likely cause is what I said earlier a broken axle-shaft. If you engage a gear and let in the clutch, you will see one of the wheels moving slightly (wobbling) it is the shaft on this wheel that will almost certainly be broken. If it was the Diff itself, you would get a cracking sound and to check that it was a tooth or a sun wheel that was broken, just push the tractor about a foot and try it again. if it is a tooth the tractor will actually start to drive and then stop again, if it is a broken axle-shaft it won't drive at all...John(UK)[email protected]

Hi John, you will be getting up as I go to bed. I am near Canberra in Australia. Minus five last night. I dont know how this goes, so I will answer other comments through your reply. Thanks to everyone for their help. To Jeff-oh, a poor sentence. I started the fergy, could select all the gears, no drive to rear wheels , but could raise the hydraulic arms. I have pulled off both inspection plates, ran the fergy, put it in gear, looked in the two side plates, can see what I assume is the pump body high up. There appears to be a shaft coming out of the back of it.Doesnt seems to be above the pump, but two of you said above so must be. It does not turn with the motor running and the fergy in gear. The fork effect that straddles the mainshaft is intact. Boy, do I need a diagram! The PTO runs at the rear when the fergy is started.
I dont have a manual and have difficulty identifying the parts suggested. I have ordered one. Oil filter is on left side of engine. Maybe it is a TEA20 being Australian.
I am aware of the difference in spline and have been told in Australia are difficult to come by. It looks like you can take an axle out and keep the brakes intact, the reason you take the brakes off is to get the trumpet off to get to the broken bit of the half shaft. True? Off to Melbourne for 4 days so wont be able to do much til I return. Any sites for download of manuals or exploded diagrams John? Thanks

Hi Tim,
there are plenty of Aussies on here too who can help.
How long have you had your tractor and how much experience have you had with it?

Just trying to get a handle on how you know things when I see your descriptions of things.

What do you use it for? (How the heck do you get it started in -5 degrees!?)

- TS

Ok we are a little farther. Yes in Australia you would have a TEA-20 as confirmed by your oil filter location. The back-ends are mostly similar except for the few changes already discussed.

Here is a cut-away view of the internal parts you can see from the inspection ports.

1) The hydraulic piston - way up in the top.
2) The main power shaft that drives the rear wheels, above the pump. This is the one I am conserned about. Does this turn when the tractor is running and in gear?
3) The hydraulic pump
4) The PTO shaft. (it is also the pump power shaft) It comes right through the middle of the pump. It can turn with the tractor in gear or not.
5) The hydraulic control fork (moves the pump valve to raise and lower the lift.

If shaft 2 is not turning with the tractor in gear and running then your problem is up in the transmission case.

Another quickie test you could do now that the back end is jacked up. Manually turn one wheel... Does the other rotate? In the opisite direction? If so then you know it is not an axle issue.

If the main power shaft is turning and the wheels turn as described above, then it may be the worm gear/differential gear interface. (I think Sam discussed that.)

There is sure a good group of Ferguson People in the Taz./Aust./N.Z. area that will be able to help you get what ever parts you may need. When you get back let us know what you find out.

Till then stay warm. It is forcasted to be 36-37 deg. with high humidity here in the Ohio Valley today. Uggh.

It will be a TEA, but we don't know what axle it has, they changed at 325,001
The shaft in the top is the push rod that turns the Cross-shaft and lifts the implements. The Pump is in the Bottom.
The Shaft I was meaning was what you called the main-shaft. With the Engine running and the tractor in gear that should be turning if the axle shaft or diff is broken. If it isn't, there is something wrong in the Transmission, but that doesn't usually happen. The Fork operates the Hydraulic Control valve. I gave you my address so that you could email me and then I could send you the info that you need. I have the info that you want and I will send it as soon as I have your address....John(UK)[email protected]
