Rear Axle Knocking

Hello All,

1963 Ford 4000.

So after replacing all the bearings on the rear end and adjusting the axle spacing shims correctly there is still a knocking sound coming from the rear axles left and right sides when you shake the tractor back and forth. The harder you shake the louder the noise gets. It was there before I replaced the rear axle bearings. The differential is not moving back and forth when I shake the tractor.

Is it possible that I need to remove a axle shim or two and get the bearings a little tighter? The lugs are tight and the weights are tight. I just cant figure this out.

Any input would be helpful. Thanks Ed

Are the rims to disk bolts also tight? And how did you check that the weights are tight?

Does your tractor have power adjust rims?

If so, the rim clamp bolts must be VERY tight or such sounds will be evident.

If the rim clamp bolt/nuts are not in good condition, you may need to replace some or all in order to achieve necessary torque.

Worn differential bearings and cups will make a noise when rocking the wheel but this is not a replace it now concern, most have this play.

I am sure they are tight because the 1/2 inch impact gun stopped
moving...I have a big compressor and a snap on gun.

When you say the differential bearings and cups are you taking about the ones that hold the differential in place or the ones inside the differential. I replaced the outer ones but didn't take the actual differential apart.

I thought you just replaced the outer rear axle bearings, the center differential only has outer bearings, did you replace the cups in the rear axle trumpet housing also while replacing the bearings?
