Rear Axle Seals

I would like to replace the axle seals which leak like crazy on my '46 2N that already has the Sure Seals. I'm thinking of replacing the outer seals and also putting on new Sure Seals as a good back up. Would this be a good idea? If so how hard are the seals to get off and on?

Sure seals should not leak. Mine don't and my Dad has had them on his 2N for many, many years and not a drop of leak..I'd just replace the S Seals..Be sure the area on the axle where the seal runs is clean and slick..Remove dipstick side plate bottom bolt and let fluid drain till it stops running out. Replace the bolt. You ought to be good to go..

Forgot to remind you to stuff your bearings good with grease before installing the new Sure seals..Also coat the edge of the rubber seal with a little oil or grease before installation..Also bevel the outer, metal edge of the seal to make it drive in better..Bevel with file..They can be contrary. Be sure to start and drive in evenly..

A three inch PVC pipe makes driving the sure seal easer. It takes a good press to get the bearing and lock ring back on after cuting the old ones out. Just 8 N's has a how to that isn't bad.
Good luck Mine is now finished and hopefuly next week I will get some seat time and see How good a job I did

Most likely it is. Remove the bottom bolt on the dipstick plate and see what happens. If oil comes out, let it drain till it stops then replace the bolt..

I have only fixed one 2N seal problem,,, went for the kill and did both seals and bearings,,, could not are will not take a chance on something I can not see :P ,,, I personal could not see were any one else would,,, done right and you are done with it

My $.02.....it has sure seals so someone has done something already. Did they do it right? Why is it leaking? Oil overfull? How old are the SS's?

Its your call if you r&r the outers. IF the SS's are doing their job, the outers should be a moot point. Check your axle where the SS rubber will ride. If it aint smooth, it'll still leak.

FWIW....when I did mine, it did the outers and SS's. I didn't wanna have to fix it again.

HTH.....have fun.....don t. ....
