Rear wheel primer choice

I sandblasted my rear wheels and they turned out nice. I am trying to save a little money and I am not a painter. I want to put some primer on the rims until I can get the tractor professionally painted. What is the best way to apply a coat of primer? Can you brush it on? I was hoping not to use a rattle can. I am planning on using IH paint on the rims and tractor. Any suggestions.
Thanks

I have done it both ways just too much hassle to clean a gun just to prime small things so i use a spray bomb just use a good primer if your finishing with silvergray i use a gray primer. If youre going red finish use red primer.

Bite the bullet and go buy an inexpensive paint gun. You need to spray a epoxy primer and you can't get that in rattle cans, as it comes in rwo parts..
Remember, plain primer surfacer is NOT paint, is Not waterproof, or proof to anything. Anything that comes in contact with it will seep into it. You need to paint over it as soon as possible. If you can spray them with primer, you can spray them with paint.

I just painted my rims for my WD. I in no way claim or care to be a painter. I used rustoleum rusty metal primer and silver paint with a 15 dollar gravity feed HVLP gun from harbor freight. It will not pass inspection from the correct police (color and pre-paint prep) but paint was cheap compared to auto paint (22 VS 95+ per gallon). I have had really great results using their paint on projects. That type of paint can be brushed on with decent results it just depens upon if you looking for a show piece or to preserve a working tractor. Like Gordo said do not leave just primer on metal will rust through primer.

I use Case Ironguard primer. If the part is lightly pitted and needs filling I use spot putty or bondo. The Ironguard is inexpensive, shoots easy, sands easy and I have put finish color on months later with no problems. I have never had a part rust that was primed with this stuff.

Go to Home Depot and buy a product called "Must For Rust". It is not paint, but a phosphoric acid product in a squirt bottle (not aerosol) Squirt it on and use a paint brush to spread it. It is not waterproof, but will provide protection for months if kept inside. Before painting, remove most of the residue with a scotchbrite pad. If any rust appears, it can be easily sanded off. Using cheap primer is the worst thing you can do, and your painter probably will not like it and have to remove it anyway.
