Rear Wheel Studs 601 Ford

Is it possible to change the wheel studs by takeing the brake drum off, or is it nessary to pull the axel? Thanks.

Unfortunately, you must pull the axle to replace the studs. Furthermore you must also remove the shrink fit bearing retainer collar in order to press the axle out from the bearing in order to get it out of the hub and backing plate.

Not a small job.

If you search on "rear wheel studs" you will find a link to some photos I posted (with help from John in LA). You can drill the backing plate at 12:00 between the casting for the axel bolts and then plug it after the installation. You may not want to do this if it is a show tractor.

I also replaced my studs without pulling the axle. When I got into it I had found the previous owner had already done the same. He had cut a hole in the backing plate with a torch (at 6 o'clock position) and then welded up the hole. I just cut his weld out to do it again.
