Rear wheels and trans

51 8N. If both rear wheels are off the ground and the clucth is out, not engaged, shouldn't the gears in the trans try to turn? I'm stuck in 2 gears and can't get them loose. Thought that getting the wheels off the ground and moving them back and forth I could work the gears a little and with a pry bar might get lucky. Nope... didn't work the gears don't move. Tires spin in opposite directions as they should so now I'm really confused as to why I can't move the gears.

Because the trans is jambed up.. with 2 gears in at once.. there are 2 ratio's.. It's a tight fit...

If you can't get the gears to move by prying on them from the top you may have to resort to opening up the left side where the PTO shifter is and loosening up the bolts that hold the PTO shifter and lower rear transmission shaft bearing housing. Once the bolts have been loosened about two rounds or so you should be able to lightly hammer the PTO/bearing support at the back of the transmission so it will move back and release the wound up pressures within the transmission.
May need to remove the right side inspection plate also to get to the bolts.
Might even try loosening the top shaft bearing support housing if it is more accessable than the PTO support.

No need to remove the PTO.

souNdguy, this is what confuses me. I would think with the trans locked up as it is in two gears that I shouldn't be able to move the rear wheels at all with them off the ground.

I think it's time that you get someone to help you on this.. preferably someone with some mechanical experience.

You will probably need /want a parts and service manual.

Ignore what windy said.. Both of you are forgetting that this tractor DOES have a diffy in the the rear end.

Lets look at the facts of the situation.

rear wheels are off the ground = true

Tranny is locked up tight = true

If tranny is locked up tight, then output shaft to diffy is locked up = true

If if diffy input is locked up ( trany output shaft and diffy input shaft = same thing ).. then you get 1 rear wheel spinning one direction, and te other rear wheel spinning the other direction.

That's just how it works guys... it's not magic.. it's just gears.

No go get some help and get that tractor fixed!

I havn't seen your post detailing what your problems are so i can't comment.

In short.. if the input to the diffy is locked.. and the wheels are off the ground. then the wheels will counter rotate. if they won't.. ya got something in the 'chunk' that is messed up.

With both rear wheels off the ground yep you will be able to turn therm. The differental is why they will more and you take out the trnny so to speck. Now if you put one tire on the ground and the other one jacked up you will not be able to turn the wheel because it will be going to the tranny. Be careful if you do that because you could knock it off the jack if you try to turn the wheel thats up because the other tire might try to pull it forward or back.

I had the same problem with my NAA ( same tranny). I ended up splitting the tractor behind the transmision. I loosened the bolts at the output shaft, and bang, released the pressure!
I had 2 broken gears and a tooth jamed up.
Second gear is the weak point in these transmissions. I hope you have better luck!
