Where is the most reasonable place to buy kit for 4-53 2 valve motor? If too much tractor will be for parts. Also would it be better to get a 4 valve motor?

Your best price will not be at the Detroit dealer!. I have a friend of mine that runs a Detroit shop and unless it is a bid job and OE parts are part of the bid they use all aftermarket kit. Shop around. Some of the different brands are the same kits in different boxes. I would go 4 valve and make all the necessary changes.

I have to agree with John in one respect. Going to a Detroit Diesel dealer will not only cost you a good deal more but the service is horrible. They may refuse to sell you what you want because it did not come in the engine originally. They have these guys that look up parts on the computer but don't know anything about the engines. Shop around. Look for a place that can do your machine work and sell you parts.

4 valve heads are expensive and over rated. If you aren't going to do competitive pulling with it you don't need a 4 valve head so don't worry about it. Even if you do competitive pulling you may not need a 4 valve head depending your weight, speed and rules. Two valve heads are less prone to cracking and sound better. It's not hard to swap to a 4 valve head later when you can afford it and if you decide you need it. Pick up the latest issue of Oliver Heritage. It has a lot of good information on your engine you are probably going to need.
