Rebuild Kit

Going to rebuild the 2n engine this week, but I was wondering if there's a way to know which pistons I have (3 or 4 ring, I believe) without pulling them?

It's up to you which you run, I am running 4 ring right now.

I'm not so sure that is the best plan though.

3 may be better.

There are pros, and cons, and opinions.

I don't have one, I just said, 'Ell, give me the 4 ringers.

That does seem to be the popular concensus.

Can you testify to that fact you are posting?

My bet is that is an OPINION.

My 4 ring piston 49 8N *236763* runs hard, and strong, and true, with those 4 rangers.

Nearly never have to bump the choke for it to start.

Will it wear out fore a 3 ringer?

I have run both and I don't know.

Is there anyone that does, can you offer proof, or just an acquired opinion?

I agree with ya Dunk. If some is good then more is better so way too much orta be bout right. In a small bore, long stroke, low RPM, high torque tractor motor, ring drag ain't much of a consideration. Back in my drag racing days I learned that a 40% reduction in ring friction was good for about two per cent more horse power at 8,000 RPM on a 302 cid Chevy. At 6200 RPM the difference was too small to measure on our dynomometer.

Thanks for the info. Anything special need to be done before driving them in? I read somewhere about using loctite - should they just go in dry?
