Rebuilding an injector pump

Hello all I have a roosa master Injector pump that has pressure issues. I can't start the tractor without pull starting it and I can't bring the engine to an idle without it dieing. So I want to rebuild it but all the shops around me either don't want to mess with it or they want a high rate to work on it. So I thought I could rebuild it myself. the mechanical part does not worry me. But I'm not sure what all goes into recalibrating the pump.

Do you guys have any input? Thanks

Well I select a repair service shop that familiar with my pump. Discuss the issues and If confidence they know what to do for correction , I issue a work order.
We have a number of good Diesel pump technician here at YT so your in good hands With advice.
Would help to give a comment as what this injector pump goes also !

Forget doing it yourself and pay the money

The calibration is where the cost and specialization of a diesel injection pump shop comes in. They have a test stand with the proper equipment. It's not something you can do by eye/ear.

This shows the process on a Bosch VE pump, which is similar in design.

Plenty of videos on Roosa Master pumps on youtube.

I forgot to mention , asked your technician how to time your engine before you take it off the tractor ,this so vey important.
also how to ship it. And what the insurance is so if lost you can recover a pump smowhere
, important .

From the symptoms you describe, it's very likely the "head and rotor" are worn out.

IF that turns out to be true there is NO "cheap and easy" fix to this I.P..

Yes. Have it repaired....Dieseltech who is a member of this site does that. You need to know what you are doing with them if you expect them to work properly!

If it truly is a pump that is so worn that it is not building pressure, the hydraulic head is done and you are best to find a replacement pump, either used or reman. It could also be something as simple as the pump timing being off causing your issues though. Typically if the pump is worn, the issues will be worse when the engine is warm.

A Roosamaster pump is relatively easy to reseal on your own workbench, the only major calibration is max fuel delivery which is not that critical to the engine running. Really no reason to mess with the delivery setting when working on the pump, it is part of the hydraulic head, and generally the hydraulic head is good or garbage. As far as diagnosing the pump and determining if it is operating to spec, that is where a test stand comes in.

The injector pump is on an Oliver 88 with a super 77 engine. The injector pump is a roosa master 635
I called a local Oliver parts dealer that I do a lot of business with and he said he has a completely rebuilt roosa master 633 for $1000 or $800 if I give him the core. Does this sound reasonable?

The last Roosamaster I had rebuilt was $701.00 around six years ago.

Reach out to diesel tech on here before you do anything.

You can fix the pump if you have moderate mechanical skills. As long as you don't change the stroke length of the plunger there is not much to adjust. I would suspect the vane pump. This pump is just inboard from the fuel inlet. You can easily test for a bad vane pump by suppling fuel under pressure to the pump. With fuel supplied at 10PSI if your tractor should crank and run.

Hard starting AND dies when going slowly down to idle means the head and rotor are shot, TOO MUCH slow speed internal leakage.

The last Roosamaster I had rebuilt was over $1200 and that was last winter.

It could be the head and rotor shot. But it also could be the vane pump or the regulator for the pump. Every pump problem is not a major repair.
