Well, first thing that comes to mind is that there’s no fuel flow.I have a kohler k161 I rebuilt. New piston and rings, rod everything pretty much and it won’t start only runs off stetting fluid and it’s more of a back fire and won’t start up any ideas what it could be? Timing marks are right and new coil and points set to .20

Dave
I thought so also but both marks line up and it backfires with gas or starting fluid and doesn’t startSounds like a timing issue to me if backfiring on starting fluid.
I didn’t replace the valves but not sure on clearance, we have the coil system on ours not a magnetoDid you replace the valves on the engine rebuild? If so, did you file the valve stems to get proper clearance? You may want to check the valve clearances. The K161 has non adjustable tappets.
Also the magneto ignition system on the Kohler K series benefit from a slightly advanced timing. So try point gaps of .018, and .019.
The exhaust was at .11 and Intake was .04 so we ground the stem so it’s correct and now it has to much compression it seemsI'd recommend check your valve clearances. They are likely tight.

Are the passages in the carb clear?when I pulled the bowl off the carb it was full of gas and we used starting fluid to
The plug and wet and sprayer starting fluid in the carb. It’s a new carb from isavetractors so it should be cleanAre the passages in the carb clear?
Fuel in the bowl doesn't mean its getting into the engine
Is there gas on the spark plug?
Have you tried shooting gas in the carb intake?
.004 I grinded the valve stem and it’s now in spec.11 and .04
OR
.011 and .004?
I set them to what the service manual sedIs the carburetor set to spec?
I don't know if the jets come screwed in all the way but they should be adjusted out and see if that makes a difference.
It does start. I think we gotta clean the carbremove the plug and squirt 2 or 3 shots of gas in the cylinder. if it starts you know your problem.
ya you said starting fluid, i dont call that running,... im talking actual gas. it will start .and even if you keep misting the gas in the intake with a spray bottle it will run. then its carb cleaning time which should have been done on the overhaul anyhow. It does start. I think we gotta clean the carb
