Rebuilt engine not starting

I have a kohler k161 I rebuilt. New piston and rings, rod everything pretty much and it won’t start only runs off stetting fluid and it’s more of a back fire and won’t start up any ideas what it could be? Timing marks are right and new coil and points set to .20

Well, first thing that comes to mind is that there’s no fuel flow.

Did you replace the valves on the engine rebuild? If so, did you file the valve stems to get proper clearance? You may want to check the valve clearances. The K161 has non adjustable tappets.

Also the magneto ignition system on the Kohler K series benefit from a slightly advanced timing. So try point gaps of .018, and .019.

I didn’t replace the valves but not sure on clearance, we have the coil system on ours not a magneto

when I pulled the bowl off the carb it was full of gas and we used starting fluid to
Are the passages in the carb clear?
Fuel in the bowl doesn't mean its getting into the engine
Is there gas on the spark plug?
Have you tried shooting gas in the carb intake?

The plug and wet and sprayer starting fluid in the carb. It’s a new carb from isavetractors so it should be clean

remove the plug and squirt 2 or 3 shots of gas in the cylinder. if it starts you know your problem.

I suggest you clean the "new points". If that doesn't work put the original coil (possibly old points too) back on. At least that will help eliminate them as the culprit.

It does start. I think we gotta clean the carb
ya you said starting fluid, i dont call that running,... im talking actual gas. it will start .and even if you keep misting the gas in the intake with a spray bottle it will run. then its carb cleaning time which should have been done on the overhaul anyhow.

It’s a new carb from isavetractors. Are they any good? First one I ever used
