i have a 6.5tecumseh engine that the recoil rope btoke. what is the easiest way to get it apart? it looks like a large role pin in center of recoil and no screws at all. put alittle presure what looked like the roal pin and the hole recoil began to deflect so stoped that and thought l had better ask for help. it is not on a garden tractor just a go cart thanks

The easiest thing to do is take the whole starter assembly to a small engine repair shop. There is a spring that has to be recoiled and is a real PIA to do by yourself, especially if you've never done it. Should cost about $25 or $30 with a new starter rope installed. Some of the best money you will ever spend. Dave

If eng an ohv 6.5 hp you don't have to disassemble starter to replace rope, remove old rope by pulling knot out of recess in rope pulley & pull out old rope, measure total length of rope removed plus broken length on handle, cut a length of new rope the correct diam + 6-8" longer than old rope, wind rope pulley counter clockwise 4-5 turns to preload spring & shove a thin screwdriver, thin steel stock etc thru pulley spokes & slots on starter houseing to hold pulley, when winding pulley lock same so rope hole in pulley lines up with rope eyelet hole on houseing, cauterize end of rope with a match, tie a knot on end of rope on outside of houseing, shove cauterized end of rope into eyelet hole, into pulley, pull rope out of pulley, tie a knot in rope & pull rope so knot goes into recess, hold end of new rope, pull out whatever you used to lock pulley, maintain tension on rope allowing starter to slowly pull new rope into same, remove knot, install pull handle on rope & trim to length needed, install stop on rope.

Some are non-serviceable. They made it so it does not come apart. If the spring is good, you can rewind it and put new line on. If spring is bad, usually you cut the rivets or remove screws to take recoil off housing then install new assembly. New recoil goes for around $15 to $60 depending on model.

Aww, c'mon, Dave! There's no satisfaction in that! The real thrill is saying that you fixed it yer-self.
Well, there is another thrill--ya have the housing upside down in yer lap, and suddenly whatever ya had holding that inner pulley from re-winding--suddenly slips off, and parts go flying everywhere, and "Mr. Big" shudders!
And, you go on a floor search for a missing part! BTDT! RJ14
