Red oak logs

Can anyone tell me the value of standing red oak? I was offered $1500.00 for 10,000 B.F of timber. Logs will be anywhere from 16 to 24 feet. Located in central Ia.

That's the same price my buddy's dad was just quoted for his standing timer, 15 cents a board foot. Down severely from 2 years ago.

A forester told me he's seeing $1.00/bdft,but I don't remember what kind of wood. Generally, most wood here in Michigan is worth more as firewood than timber. This same forester told me chippers were paying $3.00/ton or around $8.00 a cord. I wouldn't let a logger on my propertyfor eight bucksa cord.

Hi just an idea, try calling your department of Forestry and or your cooperative Extension at your land Grant University;they will lead down the right path. I would be in Heaven if I bought red Oak at 15 cents a board foot...All of my wood working friends would kill for that price!Best of luck Woody.

The market is way down, so don't sell now if you can afford to wait a few years. Here in NY you can get the semiannual DEC stumpage price report and that will tell you a lot about what is normal in your area. I think a lot of states will have it free online. I saw and sell red oak lumber off our farm for $1 a bf and can sell all I can saw.

Zack, thanks great tip! Ok HD Type in your state name followed by stumpage report. A list of state cooperative Extension's comes online pick your State and read the report...I learn something new everyday Woody!

Grade 1 Red oak logs here (Ontario) are running about $350/thousand cut and delivered to the mill. By the time you throw in the lower grades I think you'd be doing good to get $80-90/thousand standing here.

How many board feet. some saw by the hour others by the board foot.My small band mill cost me 5500.00 and sawing is hard work.

What's the final product worth? $250 doesn't sound out of line at all. I've sawn some 'on-the-halves', which would make the lumber worth $500; doubt you can buy it for that at the local mill.

That much oak rough sawed would cost 10000.00 here.Rough sawed hemlock costs 40 cents per bf here.Let it grow and buy a small band mill.

OK HD,sounds like you are getting some really great advise from everyone! Sit tight, wait for the market to rise in value, keep the trees in good health and best of all enjoy what you have...Best of luck Woody!

$250 a thousand that"s a bargain. Try buying that at the mill. Would run $700 to a $1000. I barely make a living running my saw at $250 a thousand.
