regrouting in the bathroom??

I need to regrout in the bathroom tile on the floor, the grout isnt chipping out or anything, my wife wants a different color and one that is sealed,, I never got around to sealing it the first time, 3 yrs ago,,

my question is do I NEED to remove the old grout,, or can I just regrout over the existing.. thansk pat

I looked it up on the internet and of course I need to remove the old grout,, I knew that before hand but was hoping to get away with it,, I have way to many things to do,, my wife was going to try it,, but we all know how that goes,, oh well I better prepare to get dusty, pat

Check with a tile dealer, as they make a product that goes over the old grout. My son built a new place on a lake and the grout they put in dried two different shades and looked like he**. We agreed to let them try this product and give us a ten year guarantee. This was done over a year ago and still looks good. May save you a ton of labor, as this installer didn't like the idea of removing the grout.

I feel for you, man. Part of the joys of being married is the opportunity to change many things that are perfectly fine the way they are.

I would sure try to avoid taking out that old grout. Maybe you can just clean it up real good and seal it. There are tools for grout removal, but they're really intended for grout in bad condition. There's a Rotozip attachment that looks like it should work pretty good. By the way, anytime my wife sets me on a project, I ALWAYS use it as an excuse to buy an expensive tool that I've been coveting.

Tearing out grout that is in good shape is a real pain, you would almost be better off with a tear out. If you have a light grout and want a dark color you can stain it and then seal it. Dave

OH YEA,, I ahve been married 22 yrs now, so I know how that goes,, also the saying if momma aint happy...... well that applies sometimes too..

it should have been sealed way back when I guess,, we tried to bleach it clean but to no avail,,, she does want it a bit darker so maybe a stain,,

I sure dont want to tear that grout out,, to me it looks good ,, I only see it when I am looking down too, haha,,

I told here its going to be a mess,, so maybe I can get out of it,, we'll see , thanks for the tips, pat

Grout can be cleaned with a grout cleaner which is a mild acid mix.You can also make a weak solution of Muriatic acid.If acid mix is too strong it will eat the grout and leave pits.
