Remove paint from plastic?

How do I safely remove from this plastic knob?

you can try a bit of brake fluid (test a smal spot first)

with that said,can you just sand it smooth and prime and paint it rather than trying to remove whats on there?

I would sand it smooth with progressively finer wet dry paper, finishing with 2000 grit and then polish it up on a rouge wheel.

Try Goof Off or Goo Gone. Won't hurt the plastic. Available at all fine Wal Mart Stores

That is made from thermoset plastic. Same type of plastic used on cooking pot handles and lid knobs. Also distributor caps. A soft wire wheel can be used with care as well as sand paper. It does not melt with a little friction. Stripper does not melt it either.

I put parts like that in a pan of hot water until the paint loosens, usually about 8 to 10 minutes.

There is (or was) a product called "Unpaint" that is sold at model railroad shops that is intended to safely strip paint from plastics.

Thermoset plastic is technically not a plastic. It is a phenolic resin which does not melt. Bakelite is a company trade name and even though other company's manufacture the same type resin under other names it is most often called bakelite regardless.
