Removing a Perkins Head

I think the head gasket on my 3 cylinder 152 Perkins is blown and I need to remove the head to check it. So far I haven"t been able to find a repair manual for it. I"ve rebuilt lots of gas V8 motors but have never dealt with a diesel. From what I see it looks to be much the same. Can anyone tell me where I could find a manual or give some adive about pulling the head? Anything to look out for? The head appears to be postitioned on studs instead of head bolts.

i just ordered a manaul for my 20 industrial from my massey dealer for $70.00. not much money for a whole lot of knowledge.

I know my backhoe is a bit old so I hadn't contacted the Massey dealer yet. I'm also having trouble identifying my backhoe. I know it's an industrial model but dont know the exact one. I have it listed under "Help identify" so if anyone knows what it is I'd sure appreciate it too.
I's gladly pay the 70 bucks for the engine manual! Thanks

Look in the archives on here before you attempt to remove the head! They can be stuck on due to carbon and need to be removed carefully. The MF experts on here explained the procedure in a post on here. Dave

I'd actually rather have the complete manual. My only obstacle if figuring out what exact model I have. Some repsonses I've gotten think it may be a 30 or 40B. I thought it may be a 202 but I really don't know.
Thanks for you help!

on my 20, the tractor serial number was on a tag on the lower left of the dash panel. if you can get that, you should find someone on here that can i.d. the tractor for you. you might also try the "serial numbers" section of this site.

Hi digger -

I think both the 40B and 30 are 4 cyl.

The 40 is 3 cyl, and probably the 30B is too.

Niether my 30 or 40 had the model on the S/N plate - just a decal on the hood.

What transmission is in the unit?

Can you post a photo?

Check to see if you have the A3 152 engine (indirect injection, vertical injectors) or the later AD3 (direct injection) with sloped injectors. The MF 35 had the A3, and the 135 had the AD3. Those manuals will give you overhaul info, and possibly everything else except the steering.

Hey Jack,
I actually have the backhoe posted on this website under the "Help Identify" section if you want to take a look at it.
I pulled the head of the motor today and didn't see any obvious cracks in the block or cylinder head. The back cylinder did have antifreeze in it though as I suspected.
I can't tell for sure if the gasket is blown but I do have a picture of it if you click on the linck below. It's tough to see but a piecie of the gasket is gone between one of the water jackets and the cylinder.
The injectors on the head do sit on an angle. Does that tell anything?
Thanks for the help!

I've searched that thing over for a tag but have yet to find one so I assume it has came off. I'll keep searching and see if I can come up with somethihg though!

Hi Digger -

The picture looks a lot like my MF40 with a 34 loader. The hoe looks like the 54 on my MF30.

My 40 has power steering controlled by a steering motor under the dash, and 2 cyls on the front axle. There is no steering box or mechanical linkage (drag link) connection from the steering wheel to the front. (The MF30 has the drag link and a simgle cylinder up front like the 65 and 165.)

You have an AD3-152 engine.

And definitely sounds like blown head gasket.

Are the sleeve tops projecting a thou or two up above the top of the block? If they are a bit below the top surface, this can cause the gasket to fail.

If you have a 6 speed transmission, the 135 manual will cover most of the tractor. Steering and brakes are different. If you have the instant reverse (f/r pedal on the right rather than brakes), that too is different from the 135.

I think I have the MF shop manual for the 40, but copying and postage would likely be more than the dealer cost for a new one. They have become quite reasonable for some items in recent years.

My backhoe has a 3 speed tranny with high and low making it six speeds. It also has the shuttle shift transmission with the shifter for it being over from the instrument panel to the left.
The steering is like yours too having the cylinder driven steering instead of a draglink setup.
So you think it may be a MF 40? I wouldn't even ask for a copy of your manaul because that's too much work. I don't care a bit to buy one if I knew what to buy!
Where you from Jack? I'm down in Kentucky trying to keep these antique plows of mine working!
Was you able to see the head gasket in the picture?

Hi Digger,

Your machine looks just like our mf40C loader. Ours is a 3 cylinder gas Perkins with instant reverse. I'm not sure but the serial tag was either on the left support panel under the dash, or on the left side of the trans just above the foot board. I think the side of the trans was the place. It should start with 9A. With that number in hand the dealer was able to find out the exact model and date and place of manufacture for us. (Aug 1971, Detroit according to Agco). Good luck, Markus.

It looks like it has a "hard nose" around the rad., which would point to an MF40 but it might be a 2200 as well. I have a picture of a 2200 with the same type of loader but don't have a picture of a 40. I think they are very similar. I'm not sure if the 2200 could be ordered with a backhoe though. If it has an MF34 loader, I'd take an educated guess at an MF40. Look on the bottom of the oil pan for the casting date. I think the 2200 was earlier than the 40 but not sure. They might have been made at the same time because the 2200 was also a forklift. It's not a 30B. The 30B would have a 34A loader with smooth sides on the loader arms and not the concave grooves on the sides. Dave

Hey digger13. I just sent you an e-mail. I have in a practice sense a brand new M-F manual for the models 135 & 150. I don't think I have a head gasket any more. The reason I have them we were a vendor for some components used on those tractors. Price is right. J.

I happen to have the Perkins ad3.153 service manual from Massey. I scanned in the pages about removing the head, inspection and re-installation.

I posted then as a "Short" on the website I'm creating to support old Massey documentation.

You can find it here www.freetractormanuals.net

It works just like windows XP, click start, Our Shorts, "Removal, Inspection, and Reinstallation of a Perkins Head"

Hope it helps!

NB Canada. Just east of ME. Looking at 10 foot snowbanks.

Couldn't tell from the picture if your gasket was blown, but with the piece missing, it's a sure bet. You may see a carbon track on the head or block where combustion gasses were escaping.

I generally have the head checked for warp (and planed if necessary) before reinstalling after blown gaskets.

Hey Dave,
Your information is very helpful. I took a look at the numbers on the bottom of the oil pan which are as follows: 24866N
37172320
DA21900
9
Can you tell anyting from these?

Hey Gerald,
That's an extremely valuable resource. I hope others see your post so they'll be able to use it too. It's very helpful having folks like you out there!!

I guess having so much snow allows for more time to surf the net and help people out like me!! I really appreciate all your help. I feel like I'm moving in the right direction now. I'm going to have the head checked this week and if all goes well I'll put it back together and try it again.
It's an old tractor but sure beats a shovel!

The consensus from all my responses seems to be that it's a MF 40. Would the manuals you have cover it too? Working on it without a service manual has been a challenge!

I have heard that newer engines didn't use the same simple date. My 65 135 just has 9 12 64 and I've seen a forklift with a 3 cyl. Perkins with a similar number but for 1970. Maybe someone else will be able to decipher your numbers. I'd bet your tractor is newer than a 66. I think the Perkins website deciphers some numbers as well. The engine serial number is above the injection pump on the block. If your loader is an MF34, I would almost be certain it is a early to mid 70's MF40. There's no serial number plate on the lower dash anywhere? Or old sticker marks on the side of the hood? Dave

I have posted a photo of my MF40A Industrial on the tractor photo section. My loader and backhoe are different models but your machine looks like an MF 40 to me. My shuttle is a floor shifter and motor is a direct injection AD3-152 diesel Perkins. I got my workshop manuals from Jensales at http://external_link/

I sent you another e-mail. My dealer said that shop manual I have should be a big help to you. Let me know if you do or do not get the e-mail. J.

No markings that I can find. The loader and backhoe have serial plates on it but nothing on the tractor itself.
