Removing cast wheels from D axle

How does one go about removing the cast wheels from the axles on a '47 D. I tried with a puller and got no where. Am I going to have to remove the whole axle to get it in a press or what?
Thanks for your help.

I'd try a different puller, maybe use a hydraulic jack as power. It's a long spline so it will take quite a bit to pull. Maybe a slight heat on the hub would help.

This hobby teaches us is patience and strategy. Do you have all the bolts/wedges or gland loose (not sure how D wheels are held on)? Seems our A with cast wheels had a three eared gland or wedge and with some bolt pranks you could use bolts & nuts to work the gland/wedge out. Does it run and roll? Do you have an oxy-acetylene (or oxy Mapp or Oxy Propane) that you can apply copious amounts of heat? Whats the biggest hammer you have? How many gallons of Liquid wrench/PB Blaster or Kroil do you have? Get bolts loose sometimes driving them around SLOW with a lot of starting and stopping gets 'em loose. If not you're gonna need to go with the heat & beat (for the beat part get some good stout wood between the hammer and the wheel). apply penetrating oil, go work on something else for a couple of hours, repeat process, after four to six oiling cycles try beating, sprinkle with heat if you got it. Remember letting the equipment win is poor form and if after a day with the hammer you can still lift a beer you haven't hit it hard enough

i know what you are going through, i had to switch the wheels around on my JD A, and it was not easy, we finally got it by using a port a power and putting alot of heat to the hub and then hitting it with a big hammer, you'll know when it breaks loose, sounds like somebody fired a shotgun off!!

When we had some like that ,for wreaking them out we hooked a tractor on both sides of the tractor and jurked them off. Also take cap off and pull tractor around works some time as well.

Thanks for the help. These wheels are splined on the axle only. There is no wedge and bolt system.
And the tractor is torn down completely so I will not be able to drive it around. Not at least until I get it back together and running.
Can i put a hydraulic jack between the gear case and the wheel? I'm afraid of breaking something.

Hi,
I just did a 46 A that had not been touched for 25+ years.

Clean / lube axle well, run chain around or through the wheel
loop chain over the end of the axle, place bottle jack between end of
axle and chain. Slow and steady wins the race!
NOTE: use caution that bottle jack does not land on foot.

Here is how we took our D's wheel off. We cut a piece of all thread for both side then ran them through a hole in the hub. We put nuts on them and then put a plate for the bottle jack to sit on. We also put a piece of steal between the axle and the bottle jack to not mess the threads up.

Just completed the same task on my '48 and agree with nh8260. Hubs should break free with a few well placed hits on inner hub extension...would avoid heat if you can but could be handy.
