Removing JB QWIK Weld

used JB QWIK weld on tractor gas tank, worked great for about 3 weeks, then stuff got soft and gas is seeping

1. how do I get it off?

2. will regular JB Weld hold up to the new 10% alcohol gas?

I've never used the quik-weld on a gas tank, so I don't know about that, but in the past I have patched several car and truck gas tanks with the original JB Weld and it held up just fine. One of those tanks was on a '76 F-100 that WAS using the E-10 and that particular repair lasted for at least 10 years. It might still be holding but I no longer have that truck.

Not sure about the old but the quick is total crap. Gives JB a bad name IMHO

I used regular JB Weld on the plastic gas tank of a jeep, and put a small piece of window screen in the mix. That was at least five years ago and it's still holding

I dont know about getting it off but maybe sanding it off, I used JB on the gas tank of my 8N about six years ago and its still holding good,The key to JB is prepration, Sand it good and clean,then spray it good with carb clean and let it cure a good 24 hours or longer before putting gas in,hope this helps.James

I think something was wrong with that batch or it got contaminated or mixed wrong.

JB weld is gas stable, once cured.. tank has to be dry to apply it.. no gas in it.. then clean the area with alcohol.. mix and apply, allow to fully cure vefore adding gas. i've had a blop of jbweld on a cracked carb fuel inlet elbow for about 8ys now with no sign that's it's gettng soft.. etc.

chissle and file off.. then sand..

there is also an epoxy stick made to patch gas tanks.. claims to even stick to gas or oil wet metal... I'd clean off real clean first and drain tank.. etc.

if it's a pinhole, use a self tapping sheet metal screw and a nitrile oring. then jbweld over it... if a crack, drain tank and clean out good with detergent.. etc.., then braze or solder up..

I should have used the regular JB Weld, I have had very good results with it

this QWIK stuff sealed the tank for about 3 weeks then gas started seeping and now I can slide gummy bits of it off

trying to find some MEK to remove the gunk, stuff getting hard to find, kinda leery of using a flame around a gas tank but might try that gas tank stick

i'd go with mechanical removal.. a chissle and slight hamemr taps should get it off.. then sandpaper.

Seal All from Home Depot works very good for this application. I put it on the bottom of the gas tank in my 74 FJ-40 seven years ago and it is still holding with nary a leak.

pulled the gas tank off last nite

part of the JB was easy to take off with fingernails, chipped the rest of it off with small hammer and sharp wood chisel

roughed seam up with chisel point, cleaned with acetone then kneaded the Permatex gas tank patch I found at NAPA, stuff really sticks, NAPA also had flat gas tank patch kit but my seam area isn't very flat

will find out today if it will hold gas
