returning Craftsman tools

Just wondering for anybody that has taken back a broken craftsman tool to Sears where do you go in the store - the actual hardware department or customer service. I've got a ratchet I want to take back.

Toss the crapsman in the trash and buy a snap-on or SK. You'll be happier and money ahead when sears ends up going under. The ratchets they hand out when you go in there are nothing like the older ones.

Tools, and if you have trouble, wait till another employee comes through and try him or her.

I just go to a cashier seeing how they run so many employees these days.

From what I've read, Sears will go under in the future, they are closing 1200 stores now and that's sending a signal that the end is coming.

Craftsman is a separate company that sells tools through Sears, and now other outlets like Ace hardware, so we will still have Craftsman. Jim

I like to go pick out the replacement off the shelf first. Sometimes, especially with the tapes which they are discontinuing, they would try to stick you with a refurbished item. If you grab a new one from the shelf, they are less likely to stick you with a refurb.

The easiest way to have them refuse to honor their gaurantee is to first ask a cashier and then then ask to see a manager. No use kidding yourself that they will actually honor their gaurantee.

I have never had problems returning broken tools . The have replaced wrenches that were over 50 years old no questions asked.

I just returned a modern pos 3/8 ratchet , .They had a toolbox full of them right at the cashiers station . , they exchange 'em all day long , saves walking !! It was no problem at all.....

charlie M., Just took back about $250 in assorted wrenches last Saturday night. 2 sets (19 to 6) of old, crappy Metric wrenches, 12 pt and 6 pt plus an assortment of various sockets. All of it aquired at Pawn Shops in one-zys or two-zys or three-zy lots. I sorted them into sets and had them banded together.
I went the the tool ile and selected the indiviual tools I wanted, took them to the pay out desk at my local store plooped down an old set and the matching new ones then inputed it all and got a reciept. Then repeat with the second set and then with the sockets. and then I passively walked out the door.
On occasion I have gotten grief from a snot-nose young kid. I have simply done one of 3 things....
1st imform the young person that I have been buying Craftsman tools longet than they have been alive!
2nd IT IS MY DESCRESION! NOT THEIRS AS TO WHY I AM TRADEING IT! I am after Virgin tools!!!!
3rd I have had a couple of kids give me grief about a tool not have any problems, So I have taken many screwdrivers out to my pickup and broken them whem some snotnose kid got horsey with me! So ...Kid..."They are broke now! Any questions?.
Just go the the Main payout register at the tool section at Sears! Hope this helps!

Well, John, if Sears quits honoring its Craftsman warranty, we'll have guys like you to thank. As I understand it, you're taking back perfectly good tools for replacement.

BTW, it's "discretion". Your spelling is on a par with your morals.

You are the reason the warranty may disappear.I expect wrenches to wear out and when a socket splits because I over loaded it I dont expect free replacement.Breaking a tool on purpose and expectng free ones is stealing. Some of my Craftsman tools are 60 years old now.

Ratchets break when Dufus uses them on hard pulls that should have been done with a breaker bar.Ratchets have small parts that will break easy when cheater pipes are used.

Never could afford Snap On.I have 3 Snap on wrenches in my tool box.I started buying tools when wages were 1.25 an hour.

They are done with tape measures, I just exchanged one a few weeks ago and they sent me home with another brand.

Mark, & 36 coupe, Just for your information I have been buying Craftsman tools for over 35 yrs! I buy a H3ll of alot of crapped out and fagged out sears tools, Where-ever I find them!. When I started buying tools I DID NOT SET THE WARRANTY, IT WAS ALREADY IN PLACE,set by Sears and it was MY CALL! then and that is the way is still do it. UNCONDITIONAL means UNCONDITIONAL Doesn't it? I simply operate under the rules that were in place when I joined the program!
Sears put the plan in place, Every tool that carries a Craftsman badge is guaranteed, use, abuse, what ever!
The incident mention above was a screwdriver that that had an electrical ark burn on the shaft I wanted a new one for the one I had. The damaged was NOT BY ME, I bought it at a pawn shop, I took it to Sears for a replacement, the Snot-nose kid went to giving me greif about it, So I went out the the Pickup, stuck the shank in the trailer hitch hole bent the shank into a pretzel shape, then told the kid it was bent and had that electrical burn.
SO! What is your Beef Here? the fact that I didn't buy the tool First New? or the fact that I bought it second hand and now getting the use the warranty?
I still have My first set of Craftsman tools and use them! That Set cost me well over $350 in 1980 on a Christmas sale..... and I have used them hard! Some pieces have been warranted over the years too.
You sound like a Snap-on tool Rep. (Since you didn't buy it from me I am not going to warranty that tool!) That is why I don't do Snap-on. Yes they make very good tools just too much trouble to get warranty done!
99% of all the tools I have warranted have been severely used and abused the 1% could be questionable but I doubt it!

That is one way to get ahead, I guess... If that is what you want your legacy in this world to be when you are dead and gone, good luck with that.

Some people just can't understand the difference between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law...

Sure flies in the face of the golden rule on "do unto others...", though, in my opinion...

I know my Dad would never, ever do anything like that and he is my role model for honesty...

I have had a couple of Crafstman 1/2" breaker bars replaced. I'm pretty sure one never even had a cheeter hooked to it and broke by hand !

I'm just saying sometimes they are bad.

Just to wrap this thing up - took the rachet back at lunch today, eplained what was wrong and the clerk said "no problem". Turned out there was one problem - they didn't have another one in stock of the same model so I'll go back tomorrow. For all the guys second guessing taking in a broken rachet, this one came with a set. Feels pretty solid, its about a year old and hasn't been used much. Its never had an extension put on it - it just quit working.

dont buy SK they have been bought out and they wont warranty anything anymore, and they are all chinese tools now, I have some Sk and when they break I guess Im just SOL. Craftsmen has never given me any trouble on warranty.

There are times when you should use a 3/4 breaker bar.I have Williams 1/2 breaker bar a friend gave me in the mid 50s.It was old back then.

No Mark, John's not taking back perfectly good tools. He is buying beat up old junk for pennies and getting new in return.
I wish Sears would not warranty unless you have the original sales receipt.
SOME PEAPLE HAVE NO MORALS.

Snap on has been the worst for warranty, they make good stuff but God help you if you break it. I have heard tales about how Sears tried to mess with my Grandpa about a warranty on a Craftsman tool, the clerk told him no and he appealed to the manager in a very loud and vocal manner, they didn't jerk him around much after that. Grandpa ran garbage trucks, some of the tools were ones he'd bought to work on the trucks, some are ones they found in the garbage. I have one or two of his wrenches, I would't trade them for anything, I also have some Craftsman tools that are older than me that I acquired at auctions and second hand stores, some of them don't match. I will not trade them for new ones unless they die, the old ones are a better tool than the new, why would I trade down? I look at some of these tools that are probably 70 + years old and wonder who had them new and all the things they have fixed. The garbage business is gone, it's now part of waste management, so is our farm and the tractors we had. I wish I had more of Grand dad's and my dad's tools, when I use them I feel closer to them even though they're gone. Some of you have Dad's H or Super M, that's great I wish I still had ours, Instead I got a few wrenches and the last new car my parents bought together- Oh well.

Wow, And I thought I was a D!ck.

You have no shame and what you are doing is down right theft.

By the Way.....Learn some spelling skills.

(quoted from post at 21:47:27 03/08/12)I wish Sears would not warranty unless you have the original sales receipt.

So you have the original sales receipt for every single tool you've purchased over the years? If so WOW.

If I had that many receipts I would have to add on to my house to store them all. I have craftsman tools that are 20-30 years old, I'm guessing the receipts would have rotted away by now. Also what about tools bought in sets....? Each tool would need to be listed on the receipt then....

Some people need to think long and hard about their ideas before they voice them to the world.

I've never had any problems getting tools replaced at sears. I've just went to the cashier's area in the tool section. Never had to return too many, though. The newer ratchets really don't last as long as they ought.

My suggestion to stop people like John A, well, is to limit the number of tools a guy could warranty at one time. It should be pretty obvious when a guy walks in with multiple bundles of tools he can hardly hold on to what that fella is doing. I think it is reasonable to say when most guys wear out or break a tool, they need is relatively soon. You might have 1 or 2 whatever that need replaced. I'd admit, I don't have any recipts for the tools I have purchased (or been given), and would be less than pleased if I was denied warranty on such. The good warranty is why I have paid for Craftsman tools in the past over just going to Harbor Freight. Actually, the most recent sets I have been buying as I need them I have bought from My Case IH dealer. They are supposed to be warranted. I like working on an IH tractor with an IH tool. I haven't wore anything out or broken it yet to try out the warranty. -Andy

(quoted from post at 20:00:17 03/09/12) Works for Harbor Freight.
Must have a very small house.
Sears needs to start somewhere to stop the moral less thieves.

At least around here the Harbor Freight stores have only been around for a couple years, Sears has been around for a long long time. So in 20 years let us all know how many harbor freight receipts you still have. And with many modern receipts being printed on thermal paper they only last a couple of months and the ink fades away anyways, rendering them useless.

Its not that I have a small house I just have that many tools that I have collected over the years. I have basic sets of craftsman tools in the basement, garage, workshop, trucks, tractors, trailers, etc, not to mention all the specialty and duplicate tools that I have in the shop for working on equipment. For instance I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the number of 1/2" wrenches I own. ha
