Reusing Locknuts ?

I am putting wood block bearings back into my MF 750 straw walkers. The nuts are locknuts with the plastic in the end. Wondering if they can be reused and still hold or do I need new ones?. Thanks, Chris

I've reused them...some quite often. You could also get some red Loctite...does about the same job. If you can't spin them on by hand then they're probably still good. I wouldn't reuse in a critical application.

At a push, yes. I would thump the plastic end with a hammer to get more grip. Loctite as well is a good suggestion.

Building new locomotives, we consider "Ny-Locks(R)" to be a single-use item.

I would be pretty careful re-using them, especially in a high-vibration environment. Of course any time you have temperatures over 120 degF you probably want to avoid the nylocks.

(We won't talk about the time I used nylocks on my PowerWagon exhaust pipes! LOL)

If you want something that [u:654c4848f0]can[/u:654c4848f0] be reused, look at a Top Lock nut, where the ends of the threads are deformed to interfere with the bolt and grip tightly (an example would be the nuts on a bolted sickle section).

I have reused them at times. My self I don't like lock tite because it can be a bear to remove the nuts again. But I do use silicone on nuts all the time, it holds them good but is also easy to remove them if the need is there.

Here at work we don't re-use them. That's on aircraft and defense hardware. For things that don't fall out of the sky or affect national security if they fail, I would think they could be re-used once or twice before the locking feature is shot. Better bet is a deformed-thread locking feature.

For all locknuts cost. Install new ones and sleep better at night.
The local engine rebuild shop re-used the rocker arm lock nuts on my 4.3L Chev. Pretty much a horror story.
