Riddle me this!

Just replaced Points condenser and coil, Runs well.
When the tractor is running well and having just used the slasher for an hour or so.
Turn off the key, engine doesn't stop.
Disconnect the postive battery to earth lead, engine doesn't stop.
Switch off fuel, eventualy engine stops.
Cool down.
Connect battery and turn on fuel. Gear lever to S engine spins, but does not fire. Turn on ignition key, engine starts.
Turn off key engine runs nicely.
Disconnect battery terminal + engine runs nicely.
Is this just my ignition key switch?

My te20 is the same (though I haven't tried disconnecting the battery while its running). It won't start without the ignition key turned on, but turning the key off won't stop it. I turn it off by putting the throttle lever all the way to the top, which stops it immediately.
Turning the ignition key on also starts the generator spinning (the belts a bit loose).
It's been that way since I bought it and it never really occurred to me that there's a problem. I just chalked it up to the quirks of an old machine.

You said: "Turning the ignition key on also starts the generator spinning (the belts a bit loose)."

What the ?????. The generator should not spin by itself. It is driven by the motor belt.

If it is spinning whit the engine off and only the electric circuit open then you have wacked out magnetic fields in the generator that are turning it into an electric motor. May have to re-polorize to fix...

I know this is wrong but a little out of my field to understand totally what is happening/ why/ or how to fix.

I wouldn't have thought it should spin by itself either, but it's never been a problem per se, so I've never given it any attention. The tractor has always started right up and the battery stays charged.

here is nothing wrong with the generator nor any 'whacked out magnetics". A generator will act like a motor when powered. The problem is that it is wired up incorrectly.......shouldn't have any thing to do with ign sw & in yours it clearly does. Check wiring.

Gen. motorizing... Can be caused by cut-off relay not functioning properly (this is 1 of the functions of the V.Reg.). KB

Your problem has to be either in the ignition switch or the voltage regulator. My guess is that the contacts in the regulator are stuck together and will not stop the current flow to the generator. The system must be correctly polarized when any repairs are done.

I think I remember replacing the voltage regulator. A 3 inch by 2 x 1.5 inch box with several electrical connections? Would that be right as a description of the V Reg?
But putting the Throttle all the way forward does shut the engine off. So today I got another heap of work done with the brush cutter, after I fixed the flat tyre. Well no day is perfect!

The voltage regulator is the electrical box mounted on the lower front of the battery box. If the generator tries to motor when the engine is not running it means that the cutout relay in the regulator is stuck in the closed position and at that time you should be showing a very heavy discharge on the amp. gauge.

Easy to test switch. Use alligator clip wire for short connection from switch to end of a main wire, and when problem occurs pull one alligator clip off and see if engine stops.

I have an original, working voltage regulator for a TEA20 you can borrow if you wish. My email currently not working so if you need it, post here or call me 0428 889098. I am driving to Brisbane Monday afternoon and can drop off somewhere if that would help.

My regulator is new so I don't think that will be the problem. I have ordered a new switch from the UK. They seem to be impossible to source here in OZ, even though a couple of places here do list them as available.
At the moment I'm just pleased to have the Fergy running again.
