Ringneck Pheasants

I counted 67 pheasants between Stratford, TX and Dad's place last night (12 miles) and 14 more flew out of the field at his place when I got there...

Not sure if they are getting as thick across the rest of the country or if the relatively high percentage of ground that went into CRP around here is whats causing our population increase, but that's as many as I've counted on that stretch.

They sure are pretty!

In the neighborhood I live in in NW Iowa the population seems to have declined just a bit in the past two years. We don't have as much CRP as some areas of the country. The coyote population has increased quite a bit here and we are blaming them on getting quite a few of the birds. Last year when I was harvesting in SW Kansas I saw more pheasants in one week than I have seen my entire life, but they have a lot of CRP in the area we were in. Jim

We had Ringnecks on the farm when I moved here and then they brought in a smaller type they did pretty good for couple of years but now I don't see any of either of them and the quail are way down this year also.

To many coyotes and they won't do anything about them.

Very few pheasants around here. Not many acres in CRP and most farmers have taken out hedgerows for fence to fence farming.

Here in SE Nebraska, we have more deer on our farm than pheasants.

In the sixties pheasants were thick in NY now we rarely see or hear them. No turkeys then , now it's hard to not hit 'em with the car.

im in northeast nebr just south of yankton sd so i think im in the middle of pheasant land.. but they must have went south for summer lol

I've noticed here in Central IL an increase in population. For 20 yrs or so, you have seen many at all and now all the sudden they're on the way back .

Dad"s farm is in SW North Dakota and there are literally thousands upon thousands of pheasants in the hay stacks as soon as the snow flies. Way too many, would like to see them hunted down a bit, but hunters seem to think poaching is better than asking permission.

Used to be plentiful here in Manitowoc County, WI. As a kid we were always flushing them out as we walked or biked trails. Then in a short time the mostly disappeared. A friend who hunts claims that whent he Hmongs first moved here they would scavange for and take all the eggs from the nests. They are making a comeback lately.

Were you near abundant or north of Guymon, OK??

I saw a group of 80-90 birds out in that area altogether one afternoon.... The weird thing was they weren't spooky at all and most all were roosters... If it hadn't been out in the middle of nowhere, I'd have thought they had been raised by someone!

Been seeing quite a few of them around here but not nearly that many. Might have to come up your way when the season opens.

I have not seen a wild one in eastern Ohio since I was a kid. I hear in western Ohio there are quite a number. Also, seems that gouse have disappeared also. I used to kick them out all the time while deer hunting, now I'm lucky if I kick out 2 a season. We have a lot more fox and coyote.

JDB, I'm twenty miles west of Lincoln, halfway between Seward and Milford. I've been through Louisville a few times.

In fact, in 1985, I bought an 856 Farmall on a farm auction of Vern Lau's by Murdock. Interesting thing was, a few years later, I took a class in Human Geography at UNL. Leafing through the textbook, I found a half page photo simply captioned, "A farm auction in Nebraska in 1985", in a chapter on agriculture.

I thought it looked familiar. It not only was Vern Lau's auction, I was able to clearly pick myself out in the photo. I didn't get any extra credit on my grade for being in a picture in the textbook, even though I tried.

I was suprised to see ONE fly across the road near here the other day. Haven't heard one crowing around here for several years... Used to cackle back at them and get them to respond once in a while! Dratted coyotes have eliminated almost all the small game around here. Sure would like pheasants back!

Like to see some here. Been gone over 15 years. South Michigan near Toledo. When I was kid you could see 40 easy in one day after school.
