Rings seating

Has anyone else had trouble getting rings to seat with a big bore Jacks block?

BTDT, I had 2 or 3 sets of rings in mine and they never did seat in. You arent trying to use a chrome top ring on the steel sleeve are you?

I've got a feeling that if you run a bore guage down the bore and turn the guage 90* and do it again you arent going to like what you see. I would bet out of round bores are atleast part of the problem.

If you lubricate them with a heavy oil a chrome ring won't seat. Here are a few things you can try and any big bore with a thin sleeve has a lot of out of round (ex. 7.5 bore .180 wall .010 easy). Run it and just about choke it on brake cleaner. Cleansing powder Bon Ami, Ajax etc. sucked into the carb while excelerating the engine these are old timers tricks. I have had to do this on some of the parade tractors that were built and never broke in and set. Most ring manufactures now recommend a very light oil like penetraing oil or WD-40( varsol and water) for cylinders, I myself use ZEP. CAT and Total Seal recommends they be installed dry .

In the one and only.....I just dont feel like tearing the pig apart "again". How's things down south?

I really dont know what to tell ya. You might try the Ajax trick LW mentioned. Did you touchup hone the bores before you put it back together just to rough them up a touch w/ some new crosshatch? Were the cylinders glazed over at all when you took it apart?

Out of couriousity, what kind of oil are you running? I know a guy that has a Jerry's block in a G that oil smoked out the exhaust bad; he started the thing off on Rotella oil and the rings never sealed. Put new rings in and used JD break-in oil and no more smoke.

Is the smoke out the exhaust or blowby out from around the clutch? Mine never smoked out the exhaust, but had blowby coming out around the clutch area something fierce.

Maybe lack of use is why the rings wont seat? Get out and run it! :lol:
Things are going good down here, got a few pulls in.

Try running Deere break-in oil. The other remedies sound a bit risky to me. I'd only use that as a last resort.

Juggs, did you put chrome rings in there or cast?
