RINGS--which side is up

When I removed the old rings I took notice of which side had the beveled edge. The beveled edge was up.
The new rings show that if they have a stamped dot on them, (they do) that side goes up. They also have a beveled edge, which if the dot goes up, the beveled egde goes down.
If they did not have the dot, the beveled edge is shown as being up.
Am I correct to assume that the dot is the determining factor and that I should disreguard the remaining info?

It has been 10 years since I put in new rings. I do have one tore down and went to look and the groove is up. This is a set I put in 10 years ago and I couldn't see a dot, but the manual says if rings are marked top to put that side up. Says nothing about a dot, but I do remember seeing dots on them before. If the instructions that came with rings says dot up, I suspect that is the way you need to install them. It is a little confusing aint it? Maybe a more definite answer will be posted by someone who has replaced them more recently than me.

A friend had said that if I put the rings in, upside down, I will have an oil burner. It looks like a 50-50 chance.
I am quite confident that the dot has to go up requardless of the beveled edge, but this a job that I do not want to do over again.

It is funny that the bevel would be up for one set and down for another. I would wait and make sure too. Sorry I wasn't more help, but don't want to tell you the wrong thing.

If it is in - it is up.
If it is out - it is down.

(And I am talking about the bevel or step.)

That's how to remember it. Rule of "thumb" way to remember it when I was taught my trade over 35yrs ago.

According to the Hastings website the "pip" mark always goes up. I just called the machine shop that has my crankshaft and he confirmed that as well.
If the rings do not have the "pip" then the bevel will determine which side is up.

Dot is always top side of ring. Bevel always goes down. Why would you put bevel up?,, so you could get more blowby? later Hoss
