Road trip North (Canada)

While this may be OT we are all tractor guys and will be checking out any we see. A few oldfart good friends, a dog, and my self are headed to Canada to do some waterfowl hunting in October. We are going to Saskatchewan. None of us have ever been over the fence. I have been reading internet sites that tell about guns, meds, paper work needed, and other item you can and can not take. Other than knowing about the cost of fuel we are greenhorns to Canada, but not to shooting ducks and geese. And I am sure not worried about having a good time with this crew. Better keep some bail money in my boot. I would appreciate any advice you may like to pass along about a road trip to that area of Canada.

Be sure you all have up-to-date passports. And don't steal anything.

Had a neighbor that went to Canada hunting and cut a Christmas tree to take home with him. He was caught, taken to Queen's Court and fined. He watched the bailiff open a side door and set the Christmas tree outside in the alley - so he drove back into the alley and stole the tree again (figuring that he;d already paid for it.

Unfortunatly, the polce blocked each end of the alley. Then he paid a much larger fine and rested in jail a few days.

If you have been read on taking guns into Canada you know about the non-resident firearms declaration and not to sign it until you are where you sign it in front of a Canadian custom officer . If you borrow a gun in Can. you have to also get a different permit. If you take over 3 fireams you need to fill out another sheet for that. If I was you I would get in contact with the Canadian Customs and find out every thing you need so you have no delays at border. Don' foeget your US passport. Have a great hunting trip !!

I beleive your allowed to bring certain rifles and shotguns up here. I'd imagine you want all the documentation you have on the guns. Radar detectors are LEGAL in Saskatchewan. Doesn't mean they'll let them across the border though(federal law, so it depends if the federal govt. frowns upon it.) Make sure you bring your passport. Speedlimits are from 62-68 mph on most of the bigger highways. Fuel should be (at the cheapest) $4.39/gallon. Be ready for a wait at the border. Don't ever answer with any smart as$ replies. You'd think that's a given, but some people are just too smart for their own good. Just reply with straight foward, fully honest replies. Have you passport ready, also make sure to have you drivers license and insurance papers ready too. Won't likely be asked for it, but they may do random checks to insure your insured. They want some sort of documentation on the dog and proof of rabies shot, and obviously he/she must be in good health. Your only allowed so much ammo before paying tax on it, but it will be difficult to attain it in Canada unless you find a Canadian friend with a PAL(possession and acquisition license). If you have ANY type of criminal record you'll want to talk to Canadian Border Services Agency to see if it will affect your ability to cross the border.

I haven't been to Canada since the new security setup. Most people say going into Canada is easy but better have everything in order when you come back into the states.

A couple of friends of mine drove up to canada to do some hunting. After about 14 hours on the road they got to the border.

The border agents wouldn't let one of the guys in because he had a DUI conviction several years ago.

He didn't want to wreck the trip for everybody, so he rented a car and drove home.

Not sure if they're still that strict, but it wasn't all that long ago that it happened.

I'd strongly suggest that if anybody has ANYTHING in the way of a police record, that you try to find out if it's going to be a problem BEFORE you leave!
