Rocker Arm Assembly Torque Requirements

I'm in the process of installing the rocker arm assembly back on engine head and I can't find the suggested torque reqirements for the 4 attachment bolts. Any ideas?

Also, I'll need to adjust the rocker arms to the specified .015 inch clearance. Is there a published process for these adjustments....i.e.should the cylinder pistion be at TDC for the cylinder rocker arms I'm adjusting. Any ideas?

Thanks and have a great day!

If you contact John (UK) he has a service sheet which gives the procedure and hints on what to check before installing.

There is no torque settings that I can see in the manual but 15lbs ft should be OK. To adjust valve clearances, it has nothing to do with the position of the Pistons. You look at the valve that is at the opposite end of the Rocker shaft that corresponds with the one you wish to set. turn the engine until valve 8 is fully open and set number 1 valve. 7 open and set 2/ 6 open and set 3/ 5 open and set 4/ 4 open and set 5/ 3 open and set 6/ 2 open and set 7/ 1 open and set 8.
when I say open I mean the valve should be pressed down by the rocker. The one that is open and the one you are setting if added together should always equal 9. on 4 cylinder engines.
you should run the engine and get it hot and then set them again to .013" (.015" cold)...John

John,
Thanks....this is a BIG help.

Have a Great day in the UK!

It's hot in SC today...with the humidity factor, over 100F.

Thank Again!

When I was taking off the rocker arm assembly and the head. This piece fell out. Where does it go? All help is very much appreciated.

Welcome to the forums.

This site does not lock old threads from getting replies added. Tell us what you are working on and the details, like what engine it has in this case. And history with it.

What you have in your hand looks like a cap that was used on some valve stems to protect the end of the stem. It looks like you are working on a Continental engine.

Agreed, looks like a lash cap. If you have one probably all valves will have them, or At least 4 depending.
Thank you guys so much. Need a little bit of clarification. I’m not looking at the machine right now as I’m on the road working. For this model tractor that Engine is a SHINABARU, but don’t hold me to that spelling.

I have not flipped the rocker arms over, but could these perhaps go up inside the boots and go on top of the push rods?I had this thought after asking this question.

This is a 1510 Ford, I got it about a year ago and just started messing with it finally. It supposedly ran when it was parked. It would not start. It was locked up slightly and with the persuasion of a 3 foot pipe wrench after trying to free it with just transmission fluid and rocking the tractor, I got it to break free. No scoring on the inside of the cylinders. It appears to me somebody just left the cap off the exhaust and there was definitely water in number three Cylinder.
