But i'm having problems finding out how and what to set the rocker arms at. I appreciated any and all the help you can give. THANKS. p.s this is a 1950 john deere model A

Each PISTON at TOP DEAD CENTER in TURN ,CLOSE adjusting STUD ,back off 2/3rds turn or 20 THOUSANDS ,COLD. If you indicate wear 2/3rds of a turn is ,it will give you 20 THS nearly on the MONEY, use FEELER GAGE to be EXACT, but everybodys EXACT is DIFFERENT. Make sure LOCKING NUTS are TIGHT after SETTING . Hope this HELPS.

Carlyle, you are half right. The valve setting is .020", but you open the valves 1/3 or a turn, or two flats, to get the .020" setting. Hope this helps. Mike

thanks guys,I think i'm getting confused on the opening of the valve and flats procedure. Question, can i one by one set the rocker arms by putting the gage on the rocker arm then tighten down the locking nuts ?

Kent is right. Set them @ .022 cold and they will be @ .020 hot. You are going to get that .022 gap between the top of the valve stem and the rocker arm when the piston is just before TDC. Both valves will be closed at that time. Then turn the flywheel 180 degrees and adj the valves on the other side.
