rod bearings

Never seen rod or crank bearings over .030. .060 is nearly a 1/16"... that's a lot of metal to remove from a bearing journal.

Crankshaft re-builders routinely weld journals back up to std. and re grind them.

I'd see about buying another crank or getting that one welded.

I also say no. Crankshafts are like brake drums and rotors, there is a safety limit to how much they can turn it down. Try to deal with the minus 40 journals you have now, and feel lucky you can find .040 bearings.

Some years I rebuilt a 6 cyl. Ford engine. The machine shop had to tun the mains .040. He said that was one of the few engines that had enough meat to turn that much. That was for the mains, since the rods take more of a beating than the mains, I would go with another crank, or have the journals built up and re-ground, as someone suggested.

There is one alternative, depends how the old taps looks like. If they are not groved or too bad there is the possibility to have the taps just polished. Some do that, but, they can of course not polish it more than the limit for .040.
This can be done if the taps have shades or just is a little not so slippery as it was supposed to be. A little matt....
