Roll Pin or Shear pin

I recently made up a PHD from an old diff, but was advised to put in a number 5 or weaker Shearpin, to protect my PTO shaft. When I got to town and asked about a shearpin the desk jockey said he did not sell them only Roll Pins. Are they the same thing?

Shear pin are usually brass and made to break, roll pin are made from spring steel and are press fit in to a hole where it might vibrate out or to hold a shaft latirurally.

Soft iron bolts (grade 2), or cold rolled rod will work. Probably 5/16 for that application.

One rotary mower we had used 3" or so pieces of 3/8 rod. (They were about a buck a piece from the MF dealer, until we woke up....!)

They were driven into the hole on the u-joint yoke through the round drive shaft and the ends tapped to a bit of mushroom to keep them in place.
