Rotary mower

I am looking at buying a 5' used rotary mower. It has a tag on it that says it is a BMB made in Horton, KS. On the internet it shows BMB brought out by Rhino and then by the Alamo group. My question is does anyone on here know if you can still buy the blades for it? If so, from where? As far as I can tell, it has 2 blades, but I couldn"t see all the way under it so it may of had 4. Thanks for your time.

Are they much different than others? I buy whatever brand I can find for mine as lone as they are the right length. In fact, I have no idea what brand mine is - too rusty to tell and no data plate. The farm stores have generics.

Rick,
look it over well,
a rotary mower and a chainsaw are about the two most dangerous items you can own. ask yourself, why did this guy trade in a good workable rotary cutter?

insure the frame bolts are all there and in good repair, the bolts holding the gearbox to the deck are very important too insure they are tight. drive shaft u joint bearings good, etc: oil in gear box.

most of the time I just sharpen my blades with a 4" electric hand grinder, but I understand the correct method is to take them off, then beat out the edge until sharp again. each time you take the big nuts off the blade attachment bolts, I replace both lock washers and nuts.

!!!!!!!you do not want the blades coming loose and flying off while using the cutter.!!!!!!

it happen to a buddy of mine, but the blade only when a few feet from the cutter and hit a tree.
need to check those bolts and nuts each time before you use the cutter.

in my operation the machine would be better named a: slasher rather than a rotary cutter.

also insure it has a stump jumper under the deck and has a proper working shear bolt setup with (soft bolts, not grade 8 bolts) you do not want to hit a metal pipe and bust your transmission pto shaft or housing!!!!!!!

I'm glad you didn't call it a bush-hog like so many uninformed people do.

IMHO calling a rotary mower a bush hog is not any worse than calling facial tissue by the name Kleenex,an adjustable wrench by the name Cresent, toilet paper by the name Charmin but I'm sure you've probably never done that.

I never did call them that, but I did call a starter drive a bendix one time and got corrected aboot it, sew I don't do dat any more.

Blades should be readily available for the BMB mowers, gearbox and parts are also probable available should they ever be needed but are pricey!

Pretty easy to find blades. Parts for gearboxes and such might be different. I was talking with a guy yesterday that had a Rhino bat-wing that was not real old and parts for the gearboxes were no longer available. He said that it was going to cost $400 each to have the gears made. Might be a good idea to check it out good before buying.

My own personal recommendation to any one shopping for a rotary cutter is to make sure to remove the gearbox fill plug. Carry a piece of wire in your pocket to check oil(or in some cases the water) level and to check for contaminated oil. If there is no or dirty oil, or water contamination leave immediately. I have seen some really nice looking rotary cutters that were going to need a new gearbox. Good luck!
