rough roads

Granted I don"t get out and drive much anymore, but southeast wisconsin has to have some of the roughest roads in the nation. Hwy 59 between Whitewater and Palmyra and Interstate 43 between Elkhorn and Beloit are my nominations for roughest roads.

that route is left that way to prepare your for the illinois roads when you get here. some of the highest gas taxes in the nation and some of the worst roads. go figure.

Do Interstates count? As of a couple of years ago I 65 between Montgomery AL and Mobile AL were rough in places. Don't know if they have fixed it or not.

Apparently you never drove in Pennsylvania.

I've been a lot of places, never seen roads anywhere that are worse than here.

Geeze, you missed out on the the best that Maine's SR 52 has to offer. The press has been on it for years. Folks had bumper stickers made up - "This car survived Rte. 52", "Sorry I'm late. I had to come over 52") All that and a letter-writing campaign never got them more than a little cold-patch every spring.

Then last summer, the governor agreed to attend some function or other out there and got a taste of it. It'll take them five years to rebuild it all, but the worst of it will be a lot better next summer. Funny how that happens.

The governor of Texas has decided that instead of fixing highways that are deteriorating, it will be cheaper to turn them over to foreign companies to rebuild into toll-roads. I can't go too far without having to make a decision whether I want to take the rough route or pay a toll every few miles.
And my taxes still go up every year.

THANK our stupid Governor dum as- Doyal for that he took 1.3 billion out of the road repair budget and gave it to the schools so they can wast it

It used to be Oklahoma was in bad shape for roads, but in the last few years we've really shaped up. While there are still rough roads, the roughest and most heavily travelled have gotten or will be getting a redo. Biggest project underway right now is probably the I-40 crosstown going through downtown Oklahoma City. I was lucky enough to get to take a tour of the jobsite over last winter. They are completely replacing the raised freeway with a ground level one a few blocks south of the current location. Really quite a job, that won't be open until 2012 or so, and the old one will be demolished and replaced by a "boulevard" where the current I40 is by 2013 or 2014.

This same philosophy of privatizing roads is going on in several states. To me it's another tax and if these companies go belly up we the taxpayers will be left holding the bag just like the current bank bailout.

I-95 south carolina probably one of the most dippiest concrete highways ever.

They just did a concrete highway on route 30 in lancaster, PA not too long ago and it's already getting dippy.

IF you have no idea what i mean by "dippy," just look at how a cowboy rides a bull - same movement on a lesser scale.

Danged if somebody has found a way to stomp my toes once again!!

Interstate highways were/are paid for by anyone who buys fuel (gasoline, diesel, ??) and receives FEDERAL money. What I'm saying is that a portion of money I spend in NC ends up being spent in some other state(s) etc...FEDERAL.

Any governor of any state that sells/leases a portion of Interstate highway in that state has taken away by selling/leasing something that I helped pay for at fuel pump in my state.

Now that is bad enough....but what really grinds on my toes is that approx. 1/3 of FEDERAL fuel tax money collected is "diverted" for other uses BEFORE ever reaching the coffers of the Highway Trust Fund....and this gets to be "real money" rather quickly. IF this diversion of funds were stopped...and money collected actually went to Highway Trust Fund...the so called need to raise fuel tax/increase tolls/Vehicle Miles Traveled, etc. would/could be noticably reduced.

OOIDA (Owner Operator Independent Drivers Assoc.) had an article in Oct. 2007 LANDLINE MAGAZINE pointing out this practice and thus is the basis of my "rant".

I know that this is also a problem on a "state level" across the nation...to some degree or another.

Instead of JUST grousing about it here on this forum, we need to call/fax/write our legislators and express our opinion on what is going on with our Highway Trust Funds. Also can work through your Grange organization as I did this past year.

Thanks for letting me rant....soap box put away for now.
