round baler

I have an International Farmall super M, and am looking for a round baler that I can run behind this tractor. I woudl like to get a solid core baler, and one that I am not going to have lots of trouble with belts. I'm nes to round balers and really don't know much about them(except that they will be a heck of alot faster than my idiot cube baler).

There's probably not too many balers that you can run behind an M Farmall. There are some small balers out there that I'm not aquainted with, but still an M is not many horses.

There is about 4 problems using the Super M (1) lack of HP
(2)You will need 12V or dual hyd. depending on tying method (3) Live pto is almost a must (4)Live hyd . None of these are insurmountable but as a whole I'd say forget it.

Sounds like a long day to me. I'd be looking for a baler AND a tractor.

If you look through the archives on here, someone had posted a video about a company that was selling small round balers desined for low horsepower tractors. Believe they made about a 200# to 300# bale. Probably cost more than a new tractor though.

A 400 or 560 will operate a big baler. But the super M is lacking the live pto and hyd. which is needed.

The Super M and the 400 have the same size engine. Some Super M's had similar hydraulics also.

Everybody is being a little too negative here. I think the M would handle one of the little 4x4 round balers,Hesston for example. Like somebody said,the lack of live power and hydraulics would be a drawback,but not impossible.If the baler had hydraulic twine arm,you would have to plug in a 2 spool valve to run it. A Gehl 1400 4x5 bale would even be doable with it. As for that live power and hydraulic problem,we had a neighbor that ran an Allis Chalmers RotoBaler with a John Deere A. You talk about having your hands full. Another neighbor had a JD 510 round baler with hydraulic twine arm. His son was using all the tractors that they had with dual remotes to get edible beans planted when he had hay ready to bale. He used one with single remote,plugged in the twine arm to put the twine on,got off and plugged in the endgate to kick the bale out. Anything is possible if you want to do it bad enough.

With no LPTO,low HP and weak hydraulics the M just isn't really a suitable tractor to round bale with.Also it burns a lot of gas compared to a diesel and at around $3/gal that adds up

We bale with a 1950 Massey Harris 44 6 cyc. It has one hyd on it The baler is a Vermere 504 if I remember right. The tractor had a valve job on it in 1970. The only thing ever done to the tractor was regular service and 2 sets of tires. The baler is a manuel tie. We only bale on fairely level land so it works fine for us. We only need about 40 bales a year so it can be done. Its not the fastest bailer in the country but it works fine for us.Bought the tractor new and paid 400.00 for the baler used. Baled three years with it and no problems or regrets. Sam
