Running on choke

I have so far rewired my front mount 8n over to a round coil and rebuilt my starter. Now she only wants to run wjth the choke pulled out.

I have good spark with the new coil, rebuilt the carb and have good fuel flow from bottom hole.

I can get it started but will only run with choke pulled out. I have set the adjustment screws at 1 1/2 turns from fully closed.

Any advise?

Mike

Pulling out the choke gives you a richer mixture. So, you could have either a fuel or spark problem.

A carb out of adjustment will also cause this problem; set the main jet at 1-1/2 turns out & leave it alone.

A dirty carb can cause the problem as well; start by cleaning the fuel screens.

Dirty/old gas, or water in the gas can cause this problem.

Restricted fuel flow can cause this problem; remove the bolt at the bottom of the carb & check for flow.

On my 1950 frontmount, needing choke to run is the first sign that the points need adjusting/replacing.

A vacuum leak can do the same thing. Get a hand propane torch and carefully spray it (unlit of course) around the intake manifold at the carb to manifold interface & the manifold to block gasket of the tractor while it is running. Or, you can use carb cleaner or WD40. If it speeds up, you found the leak. Sometimes (rarely) manifolds crack or get rust holes.

When all else fails, you could have an air leak around the carb metering section. The likely suspects are leaky throttle shaft seals and/or a worn throttle shaft. Or, just a real dirty carb w/ clogged passages.

Bottom line: Probably 90% of "needs choke to run" problems are fuel related, but do not rule out ignition problems, contrary to what others may tell you. I’ve had that very same problem before w/ a rebuilt carb, fresh fuel & good flow & a tight manifold.......and it was a spark problem. But, that was unusual. Just check the likely fuel problems first.

Lastly, each of us has his own definition of a carb rebuild. If your rebuild did not include soaking the carb 24 hrs in a bucket of caustic carb cleaner & blowing out every orifice w/ a rubber tipped air gun, you didn't do a rebuild, IMHO. You just replaced parts.

Please be sure to post back & let us know what the fix was. We all learn something if you tell us what worked!

First make sure your spark is good as in blue/white and jumps a 1/4 inch gap or more. Next take the main jet and adjust it with it running turning it out and see if you can do so to the point of taking it out of the carb. If you can do that and not get black smoke and it stays running you need to open the carb back up you missed something and your carb is still clogged

did this no run without choke happen when you did the rewire?

did you remember to remove the resistor?

otherwise, if spark is good.. ditto what JM said. recheck carb...

You guys rock. Took the carb off and went thru it again and she started right up. Ran for about 15 mins to check it out when it suddenly sputtered and quit. good spark, grey like sludge in sediment bowl, cleaned it out took off carb and cleaned out, did not see any sludge. Fuel comes to carb, spark, but will not start even with starter fluid.

hange spark plugs, IF you are really certain that carb and spark are fine.

Spark is bright and I can not clean the carb anymore it has been cleaned and blown out.

lugs may be gas fouled. change them or burn hot with torch

Just got back to work on this thing. Wire brushed the plugs, checked gap and it started right up. Has a really bad miss at all throttle settings. Is running right now to see what it does after warming up.

Mike

Well after warming up I adjusted idle down then it quit and will not restart. Tried stater fluid nothing. Lots of fuel from carb, pulled #4 plug electrode was black and no spark.

You may have collapsed the float with that air compressor. The main jet and passage may be plugged up.

Have blown out all passages. I can not hear anything when I shake the float but that would be the most likely problem. I have just removed the plugs and burned them off with a torch, took carb off and gas filled bowel about half way.

Could points cause the plugs to foul. I have what looks like a good spark.

K, screw the main power adjust all the way in to seat it. Leave it there & install known good or new plugs. Then with periodic burst of starting fluid, see if you can start it & keep it running on starting fluid. This will mean nothing if you use already gas fouled plugs!

Thanks everyone for your help. Turned out to be ignition after I burned off the plugs per JMOR instructions. I took off distributor to check. Reset points and polished them, she took right off. Thanks Bruce for sending me in that direction add this to one of those time you were talking about.
