Rustoleum paint

I have used a hardener called JAP hardener worked good, geting hard to find, old time hardward store ordered it for Me.

Paint thinner is Mineral Spirits and is slow drying. I use something faster like naptha. The faster drying thinner you use, faster paint will dry. I won't use hardener because of dangers in breathing it. If you have proper respirator, fresh air breathers. etc OK. You probably don't or you wouldn't be using Rustolem.

I use Rustleum paint since it can be mixed to color I need and do not have to pay $25/qt. It does a good job and holds up well. And yes I do have proper respirator.I've had good results using red primer for rust and farm implement paint from Rustoleum / X-O Rust. Its for equipment not show. Most of the time its better than what the factory put on.

If you were using the new style of refinishing materials, you would have to use the Isocyanite hardener in it, and that is what messes up your breathing forever! Ask someone who knows--me!
I painted cars, etc., for many years, and used the old style paints, like acrylic enamel, and the newer paints that came after it.
Then, after we had been using the paints that required hardener in it to make it dry hard, for a number of years--thats when the paint companies told us it would damage our lungs! Just like locking up the barn, after the horses have been stolen.
Now, 25 years after i retired from auto body work, i cannot go into an auto body shop, because i will go into a wheezing attack, and will have to get out into fresh air, and use an inhaler, to recover!
So, if you can avoid the new paints, or have some shop do it for you-that would be good.
I have found that Rust-oleum, applied with a sponge brush, or good paint brush, does just fine for me. And, you can still buy brushable paints for the job, that don't require hardener.
Most, if not all, of the paints in use today require hardener. But, check with an auto body shop, to see if there might be a refinish material that you can use, that doesn't require hardener, or any of those dangerous additives.
