SAE 20-W engine oil

Was reading an older model A manual and it calls for SAE 20-W oil. Looked at the local stores and this oil is not anywhere. The closest I found was SAE 20W-50. What would be a good substitute to use by todays standards?

My model A calls for it and I use it only in the summer but I also have a case crawler that calls for it, not using a coolant or oil heater, the crawler will mainly be used in the summer and fall.

Pretty much any high quality engine oil on the market today will work fine. My suggestion would be to keep it simple and run either a 15-40 or straight 30wt. Rotella, Delo, or Deere would be what I recommend. All would run about the same price.

So it's alright to run Rotella 15W-40 in older gas engines? I started using that in all our diesel tractors and trucks about 3 years ago and have no complaints, would make life easier since I usually have it on hand.

In Field Service Bulletin #231, dated in August of 1955, is the first "conversion" chart for single grade to multi grade oils that I have found that was published by Deere.

It reads:

For air temperature:

Above 90*F, Single grade SAE 30, Multi 10W-30 or 20W-40

90*F-32*F, Single grade 20-20W, multi 10W-30

32*F to -10*F, Single SAE 10W, multi 10W-30 or 5W-20

Below -10*F, Single 5W, multi 5W-20

Like Jake said (more or less) anything for sale today is likely better than what they were designed to use and what was on the shelf when they were new. I've been using Rotella or Rotella T for longer than I can remember & none have conked out on me yet!

Wal-Mart's blue jug oil is likely better oil than they were designed to be happy with!

I run Deere 15-40 +50 oil in all my vehicles except my wifes car. I run 10-30 in it. But my Dodge Cummins, 86 Suburban with a 350, and all my antique tractors get 15-40, gas or diesel. Never had a problem.
